My favorite fairytale from childhood is an adaptation of the Grimms’ story “Snow White and Rose Red.” We had the record from the 1966 English-dubbed version of a 1950s German live-action film (I’ve never seen the film, but I listened to the recording almost every night as a kid).
I think I liked this one the best because it had two sisters (I have a sister) who didn’t have to change anything about themselves in order to find “true love.” They rescue a prince and help him defeat the evil dwarf, rather than being passive participants in their own story. (And the spell isn’t broken with “true love’s kiss” with questionable consent issues.)
