A Book-Lover’s Paradise

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

The scene I’m gearing up to write (hopefully today—which is why this is so late getting posted) takes place in the study at an aristocrat’s massive country home. So I’ve immersed myself in studying the differences between libraries and studies (the “library” was typically considered a women’s room, also a public room in which certain types of entertaining could be done; the “study” was the man’s private domain, with rare visitors). Through this research, I’ve seen tons of photographs of rooms that make me absolutely drool because of their grandeur and scope . . . and places for books. Lots and lots of books!

One of the blogs I follow is Bookshelf Porn, a blog that celebrates books—and how we store them—through photos. So that’s what today’s post is about. Books, books, and more books. And the creative and beautiful ways in which people find to keep them.

My Dream Library (though it needs a desk too)

Doesn’t hold much, but looks cool

A “chairbrary”

Love this room!
(not so sure about the fireplace in the
middle of the bookcase, though)

Another “chairbrary”

A wise use of otherwise unusable space—
but not for the faint of heart!

Here’s something I can’t believe I never considered—
organizing books by COLOR!

Which came first—the stairs or the bookcase?

The room has a perfect view . . .
What? There’s a window? I never noticed!

And now, my minions, we shall finalize my plans for world domination.
(As soon as I finish this chapter . . .)

What does your ideal reading room/library/study look like? If you could build your dream book room (attached to your dream house, of course!), what features would you want it to have? (And if you have a photo, please feel free to post the link!)

hmmm… if I could have my dream book room (along with the budget to fill it with books) I would definitely include a soft, cushy deep chair-and-a-half in front of a window, with a table next to the arm for my glass of wine. And it would have high ceilings and a rolling ladder to reach the upper shelves. I’m short and can’t even reach the top shelves of my kitchen cabinets! Plus I think rolling ladders are the coolest things ever.

I like the first photo best, but I’d want the room to be softer, both in furnishings and lighting. More British-down-at-heel-gentry with a few comfy chairs, a desk, and worn rugs on the floor. Or I could do it in a Southwest theme, with Navajo rugs and chair coverings, since I’m slowly collecting those. Love the staircase.

    World dominion….oh, so funny!!!

I prefer an english country den look, but with feminine touches, or french country. Lots of books floor to ceiling, a grand window with a plush window seat for reading, perhaps a loft with more books and a huge table for laying the books out while doing research. A must have chaise for reading and a fireplace. You can tell I’ve given this much thought!

Oh those pictures are gorgeous! Love the chairbrary!!!!! LOL. I think I’d like my library to be a mix of traditional and funky like that. And I’d love a picture window with a windowseat — and the panes would be leaded glass! Oh and a bookshelf of my favourite picturebooks would be the bottom of the window seat! It would definitely need a sleek, trendy looking recliner…in red! Hmm…and maybe the material on the windowseat would be yellow with red poppies. I like splashes of colours. I want a stone fireplace…or an old Irish tiled one…and I would have original book cover art framed and lining the walls above the shelves. And a desk…solid wood, substantial…old-fashioned with lots of cubbies. Can you tell I’ve thought about this before?

I love darkly lit rooms full of books and cozy chairs. Here’s a picture of one I like…with better curtains though!

My DREAM library is the one in the Beast’s castle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Now THAT’S a library!
