Just curious as to how these free e-books work. Do you still get full royalties for each copy ‘sold’? I’m going under the assumption that it’s kind of a promotion to offer up an author’s book for free — especially when it’s part of a series. The idea is to get a reader hooked so she will buy the other books, right? I’m just wondering who takes the paycut — the author or the publisher or the retailer? However it works out that’s a great honour because obviously they wouldn’t offer it unless they were sure they were going to attract future buyers of more of your work. So congratulations!

No, I only get royalties on money earned, not numbers sold. So, yes, we’re taking a “hit” on these freebies (which is why it will only be up for two weeks), but with the idea in mind that if people read it and like it, they’ll continue on to read the rest of the series. This way, it’s giving me exposure to people who might not have ever seen my book otherwise. Sure, I expect to be hit with a torrent of bad reviews because of this (we’ve all seen the Christian-fiction bashers out there take out after everyone else’s books, why should mine be any different), but hopefully there will be enough people who like it to actually let it do some good.

I do the same thing with books I love. In fact, I downloaded Laura Frantz’s The Frontiersman’s Daughter, which is also available for free right now, even though I have not just the hard copy of the book, but a signed copy of the book! This way, though, I can take it with me wherever I go, since I tend to take the Kindle with me all places.

I got this one free & then downloaded the other two
because I didn’t want the story to end.
Loved it and wanted it to go on.
