Fun Friday–Bits and Pieces and Hardware

Hardware
As you’re all probably aware, I had to go in on Wednesday to have a screw removed from my ankle—the final (medical) step toward my recovery from the broken ankle. Well, since today is three months to the day that I broke it, I thought I’d share a picture of the screw that was removed, and the X-ray, so you can see where it was:

That’s a $58 screw!

I absolutely loved all of the discussion yesterday about romantic heroes from TV, movies, and books. If you haven’t gotten in on it, click back to yesterday’s post and read all of the posts. Feel free to continue that discussion on today’s post (since comments only count toward the FabFeb contest if they’re left the day the post is published). I think I’ve finally figured out my answer to the question. It has to be Ardeth Bay from the Mummy movies. Either him or Dr. Leonard McCoy from the 2009 Star Trek movie.

I’ve started watching Stargate: SG1 on Netflix streaming. It’s a fun show, but there’s something about it that really bothers me. Star Trek got around this with the Universal Translator gadget (or a super-smart linguist on Enterprise), but in SG1, though all of these people are supposed to have been taken to other planets from different places on Earth (Egypt, the Middle East, Africa, etc.) about nine hundred years ago, they all speak perfect, American-accented English. The problem with this conceit (and yes, I understand it makes it easier than having half the show captioned or having the characters struggle with communication issues in every episode) is that nine hundred years ago, the “English” that was spoken was OLD English—which to today’s modern English speakers sounds like a foreign language (listen to the song that Eowyn sings at Theodred’s funeral in the extended cut of The Two Towers—that’s Old English, well, an approximation thereof). I know I should be trying to suspend my disbelief, but having studied the history of the English language in college quite thoroughly (one of my favorite courses, as a matter of fact), it bugs me.

I’m driving home today!
So I won’t be around to join in the discussion until later this afternoon. So please don’t feel like I’m ignoring you because I’m not responding to your comments throughout the day. It’s about a six hour drive home (in good weather) and then I must unload the car and then I’m going to have to make a run to the grocery store for some food necessities—along with everyone else who wants milk, bread, and eggs, since it’s supposed to snow tonight in Nashville. Prayers for safe travel and clear roads (and for the storm to hold of until after I get home) would be greatly appreciated.

Noooo! You can’t diss on my Stargate SG-1! 🙂 It’s my all time favorite sci-fi show. (My ringback tone is the theme music. And I’ve watched all 10 seasons and the movies 3 times at least.) Col. Jack O’Neil is one of the best characters. It was so sad when he left the show after season 8, although Ben Browder is a great addition. And T ‘ ealc is great, I loved watching his character become more ‘human’. The show has a great balance of drama and humor. They’re not afraid to poke fun at themselves, and certainly do it often enough. Hands down favorite episode is “Urgo” featuring Dom DeLuise. Peter DeLuise cameos in it as well, even though he’s normally behind the cameras. Give it a chance, the show really blossoms quickly. I think you’ll get addicted once you get into it.

It’s our favorite too. Loved the chemistry between the original team. We own the whole series, plus Atlantis (why oh why did they cancel that for Universe, which I never ever liked and just can’t watch?). Did you watch Atlantis too? Ronon!

Ah, yes. Ronin Dex. He was my sister’s favorite. I was the John Shepherd fan. I watch Universe and enjoy it despite the fact that it’s more of a drama and a lot darker. Season 2 has moved more into the scifi aspect and centers a little less around all the interpersonal drama. Each series spin off has been good in it’s own way, but nothing will ever top the original. At 10 seasons and going strong, they could have gone longer, but they chose to end on a high note rather than drag it on until the show died a slow painful death. I have to admire the creators for that. I would have been so upset if they’d messed up the show.

Oh, I’m still watching it, don’t worry. It just pulls me out whenever they run into a culture that has nothing to do with the development of the English language who somehow speak modern English.

I can understand that. When it’s something you know well, it’s hard to ignore it. I have an associates in Graphology (science of handwriting analysis) and it drives me up the wall when the tv shows make comments that are wrong about handwriting analysis. Like saying the handwriting is by a male or female based solely on the handwriting sample. There are 3 things you can never tell by handwriting: Sex, Race and Age. Everything else is all laid out in black and white. Assuming a sample is written by a female because it’s “Pretty” or feminine looking is a poor assumption. My brother has beautiful “feminine” looking handwriting. He’s also an artist. So I get why the language thing would bother you. 🙂

I could never get past my intense dislike/borderline hatred of Sam, to notice that about the English language. Sam’s character got on my nerves, and the way Amanda Tapping “acted” drove me crazy!!! It was awful. I love the movie, but was completely and totally disappointed with SG-1.

Farscape, on the other hand, is the best science fiction show ever. Yes, it’s better than Star Trek! They took an even more realistic approach to the language problem and injected a tiny chip into each character so that they heard in their own language. There was even one character who came in during the last season who learned a language by having the speaker say their alphabet and a bunch of random words. Crichton liked to toss in Spanish every now and then and he used a Spanish word when he was talking to this girl. From then on whenever she said “dead” in English, it was “muerta”.

There was one episode where they all made it back to Earth, and hearing all the different languages was pretty cool. You only “hear” in English when Crichton’s in the scene.

Made it home safely around 2:15 this afternoon, got the car unloaded, came in and checked (cleared out) my e-mail inbox, and then went to the grocery store—because unlike everyone else who’ll be hitting the stores at 5 p.m. because it’s supposed to snow tonight, I actually needed eggs and bread!

I am back on my feet with NO WALKING BOOT (!!!!!!), but moving slowly as all of that soft tissue in there has tightened up and gone stiff from not being moved around for the past three months (yes, three months since this started!)

With the walking boot on, I was okay parking a little farther away from the entrance somewhere and walking in. But now that I don’t have that support/protection and am moving at a tortoise’s pace, I did pull out my temporary handicap tag so that I could park in the first space by the door at Kroger. And with as busy as that parking lot was when I left at 3:45, I’m really glad I did, otherwise I would have risked getting run over!

I remember how stiff my ankle was after the walking cast came off–and it was only on there two months! Are you doing physical therapy or any at-home exercises? I remember that helped a lot.

I just started with the elastic bands this weekend—pushing down against, pulling up against, to the right/to the left against. And I’ve been making myself get out of the house each day and go somewhere I have to do a little walking—the grocery store, the shoe store (because I needed some enclosed shoes to wear that are safer than the Clarks mules I usually live in during the winter—and was wearing the night I broke it. DSW and Sketchers to the rescue!). Of course, as soon as I get home, I have to sit down and put it up for a few minutes, because I can feel it swelling.

They had plenty of stuff . . . of course, I got there before everyone else got off work, so I think that helped (plus we’re only supposed to get a “dusting,” and it’s supposed to get up to about 40 tomorrow, so even if it does accumulate overnight, it’ll be gone by mid-morning).

Safe travels back closer to “God’s Country.”

SG:1 . . . Here’s my theory on the language thing. Maybe it evolved on other planets as it did on ours? And anyway, my main goal in watching SG:1 is to see the sparks between Carter and O’Neil. I have nearly all the DVDs, but stopped watching faithfully when Jack left. Yes, I have a thing for heroes named Jack. And if I ever use that name in a book, everyone will certainly laugh at me. 😉

It might have evolved into modern English if the Goa’uld had only taken people from the British Isles . . . after 1066—and even then that would have just morphed into Middle English. But don’t get me started on the shifts in the English language. It was a semester-long class and I don’t want to bore you with the details!
