BYOCD: Guided Brainstorming with RWTs
As promised, let’s do some brainstorming with some “random” images (random only in the fact that I’m hoping you’ve never seen them before).
What does this image make you feel? Who is this person? What year is it? What is she thinking? What emotion is portrayed in this image? Where is she? What is the weather like?
What is going on in this image? Who are these two men? Where are they? What is their relationship to each other? Now, imagine these two are characters in your story. What’s the setting? What is going on between them? What is being said as this “snapshot” was taken? What will happen immediately after this? Is one the good guy and one the bad guy? How will what’s happening in this moment influence the rest of the story?
What has just been said to her? What is she in the middle of saying? What emotion is she feeling? Where is she? What kind of person is she? What’s going to happen next?
Who is he? What is he in the middle of? What is he thinking about? What’s about to happen? Where is he? What kind of family does he have? Is he married? Does he have children? If so, what kind of relationship does he have with them?
I would love to know what you come up with!
Hopefully by answering some or all of those questions by looking at images of “random” RWTs, once you cast your characters, you will be able to find and use images of them to help you build your characters and brainstorm ideas for your story.
If you have any questions or additional information you’d like me to discuss on this subject, please leave me a comment!

I’ll take a stab at the top picture, because it leapt off the screen at me. I even printed it out.
Her name is White Birch, and she’s 22. She’s sad because her young son is dead. She is waiting for her husband to return from raiding the settlements, because he’s promised to bring her a new son from among those they take captive. She’s standing at the edge of camp watching for is return.

I’ll use picture 3.
She’s Claire. She’s at the bar of the steakhouse she just bought and revamped ordering a double bourbon. The shipment of black angus New York strips arrived spoiled as the regfrigeration malfunctioned in the delivery truck. These steaks are the signature menu item, shipped from her uncle’s ranch in Oklahoma. The restaurant opens in two hours.

Hey, picture number one is Irene Bedard–you never see her photo anywhere. Oops, I’m not playing right, sorry.
I’ll take number 2. Jack Frazz had a late night. He just lost his wife, and now he’s lost his job. He’s determined to make his boss, Jim Tanner, pay for it. Jack is telling Jim, “Be a man, step outside.”

Hey, picture one is Pocahontas…er, I mean, the woman/voice behind her, Irene Bedard…come on, it’s the famous Pocahontas picture. She’s just seen Mel Gibson…I mean, John Smith. No more explanation needed there. 😉
Um, let’s see. I’ll take three. She’s Amy. She’s successfully made a life for herself and her family and managed to (almost) forget the sister that ran off ten years ago and broke her mom’s heart. Over her dinner date she sees her sister, who’s moving back into town. At this point she’s telling her date to PLEASE keep from drawing attention to their table because she’s afraid she’ll blow her top if she has to talk to her sis.
