Fun Friday–Virtual Shopping . . . and Virtual Dressing

Friday, September 16, 2011

I admit it . . . I have a shopping problem.

When I have money, I shop too much.

When I don’t have money, I have a problem because I can’t go shopping!

And that second one has been the issue for me for more than a year as the amount of freelance editing work I’ve received has dwindled. And now, even though I’ve taken a part-time job to replace a portion of the income from the freelancing, it still doesn’t give me a whole lot of disposable income to be able to do more than buy most of my necessities.

So I’ve converted that shopping obsession into a virtual shopping experience. I’ve done most of my shopping online for years now. But the kind of online shopping I’m doing now doesn’t cost me anything—and it doesn’t exacerbate the storage issues I already have in my house (I only have two tiny closets which don’t hold even half the clothes and shoes I already own). It also has the added benefit that I don’t have to worry about how things fit—and I’m much thinner in this virtual shopping world!

Here’s my virtual closet:

And, of course, there’s my shoe obsession—which, at this point, is very much a virtual obsession for me since I’m still confined to flats only because of my ankle:

In the last couple of years, I’ve become quite adamant about accessorizing—investing whenever money allowed in bags and jewelry. So, of course, I can’t leave those out of my virtual shopping trips:

But grabbing these images and sorting them into collections is only part of the activity. The most fun part comes from putting together outfits and accessorizing them:

Of course, I call this virtual shopping . . . but really it’s harkening back to my childhood playing with Barbies and dressing/accessorizing them.

I go through shopping phases, sometimes I love it, sometimes I’m just not interested. Shopping love usually hits me at the change of seasons, especially fall, cozy sweaters make me happy. 🙂 My sister and I would spend HOURS playing with Barbies. Oh my we had so much fun! We had beautiful furniture my grandpa built and their “apartments” were the shelves of our closet. Just bought Ransome’s Crossing this morning, YAY! I can’t wait to dive in, but I’m gonna because I have a busy, busy day ahead. Have a good weekend!

I don’t have the shopping bug. It’s always the LAST thing I want to do. I hate having to go to stores with Mama because it takes forever to go anywhere with her because she has to look at *everything*.

The only place I’m always up for is a bookstore or a place with cross stitch stuff. Everything else I’d just as soon not. Unless I actually need clothes, and even then I’m done hours before my mom and sister are.

You like to virtually shop, I like to virtually vacation. I like to plan fake flights, hotel stays, theme park excursions, historical sites, National and State parks. You name it. I love planning a vacation – even if I can never afford to go there!

I have no idea where you got this shopping gene. The shoe gene skipped a generation but shopping – not from ME!

Wow, I found quite a few that I would like. I have a daughter-in-law who likes to shop on the Intenet and she has bought and given me a lot of stylish tops, jackets, and jewelry and she is a “sale” shopper. She is keeping me up to date. However, I do enjoy buying something new for myself occasionally.
With the new job and more money coming in now, I know you will shop wisely and love everything you buy. Some things are in style a long time, but I’ve discovered the joy of a few pieces of current fads to wear a year or two.
You always look nice, Kaye, whatever I’ve seen you wearing.
    God bless you today.

It’s almost like playing with paper dolls, minus the dolls. I used to love those when I was a little girl.

Wow, that’s so cool! I love seeing all those fantastic outfits. It reminds me of a game I had when I was a little girl (in the 60’s uggh) called Fashion Plates – it was so much fun to design out fits and color them, too! I especially like your jewel tone outfits. Do you shop at Avenue?

The four main places where I shop and can find clothes that actually fit me are Avenue, Lane Bryant, CJ Banks, and Dress Barn Woman.
