Tuesday Time Turner

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Okay, so today should have been a post about adverbs. However, I pushed myself to get my galley edit of The Art of Romance finished yesterday—then followed that up with writing discussion-group questions for Ransome’s Quest and working on the final sample chapter for the new historical proposal. And, of course, nothing else is done between 9 and 10 p.m. in my house on Monday evenings other than me playing Hawaii Five-0 Bingo and praying to the TV gods that Alex O’Loughlin will take his shirt off. πŸ˜‰ By the time I sat down to try to write today’s post, my head was pounding and thinking about adverbs was the LAST thing I wanted to do! So we’re going to have what I hope will be a fun discussion day.

If you could go back in time to experience any one day in history—significant or not—when would you go?

Tooooo many choices. I can’t pick just one:

PEI turn of the century so I could read a first edition of Anne of Green Gables and meet the author.

The flood (as long as I got a gig as stall cleaner on the ark! I just love animals)

Present when Martin Luther started the Protestant reformation. That would have been exciting — if not scary times.

Ireland eons ago when the land was ruled by the Tuatha De Danann

Any time in the Middle Ages as long as I could be nobility and have a handsome knight. πŸ™‚

    Goldrush California

Wild West America (complete with my own cowboy!)

2004 when Sue Thomas F.B. Eye was still in production.

Okay, I’m getting silly. I’ll stop. And just want to say THANKS for picking my name in your Feb contest! I’m uber excited to read The Art of Romance!

Oh, I was going to say something else but Jason’s answer completely captivated me. I think a day in the life of Jesus would be my choice. Perhaps dinner at Mary, Martha and Lazarus’s house.

Yes, but would you be sitting at Jesus’ feet with Mary or would you be in the kitchen with Martha? (I’d probably be in the kitchen with Martha—I so identify with her!)

I would love to go back in time and meet and talk to Jesus! I know God placed us in the time that we are, but if I could meet Jesus in person before I die, I would! =)

A day at an English country estate in the early 1800’s.

Be the assistant to the person who first decorated the White House, and go on a “walk-through” before anyone lived there.

I’m with Lori – dinner at Mary, Martha, and Lazarus’ house.

I would have to pick just one day? Sigh. That is too hard. Here are my possible #1 choices:

    1) To be there when Jesus arose from the grave!
    2) To see Jesus on Palm Sunday as he rode into Jerusalem and lay a palm at his feet
    3) Spend even one day with Jesus

    #2 choice

    1) Spend a day with Jane Austen when she was writing Pride & Prejudice

Not everyone was joyful. Many on the Southern side felt like they’d surrendered in dishonor, so they definitely weren’t happy about it.

I’d enjoy visiting Mount Vernon, back when the Washingtons still lived there. Reverse culture shock would truly be an experience worth having.

I’ve been to Mount Vernon, so, yes, seeing it when the Washingtons lived there would be something special.

Monticello when Thomas Jefferson was still living there would be fantastic, too.

My other choice would be the day the sun stood still. Just think that would have been amazing to see.

My first thought was VJ Day in 1945 in Times Square, so a handsome soldier or sailor would kiss me out of sheer spur-of-the-moment joy. But hearing the Sermon on the Mount live would be cool too, just in a very different way. So would seeing the dedication of the new temple after the exiles returned from Babylon. The verse “No one could distinguish the sound of the shouts of joy from the sound of weeping, because the people made so much noise” always captivated me. (Ezra 3:13)

Well, everyone keeps mentioning things like the birth of Jesus and a day with Jesus. The birth (afterwords actually) would have been a spectacular occasion in which to be present. Speaking with Joseph and Mary would be a priviledge.

Another occasion that would have been fascinating would be to see the signing of the Declaration of Indpendence.

I am so happy, Kaye, that you have these writing tasks accomplished. I noticed on your Twitter feed that you have to send sample chapters to your agent to see if anyone likes them. Does this mean that Harvest House hasn’t offered you another contract like Barbour Publishing did for that second series with them?

Harvest House passed on the proposal for the series that was a direct sequel to the Ransome series, so this is a new, unconnected proposal. HH has it, but they’ve indicated that they aren’t thrilled with the idea that it isn’t set in the U.S. Because of that, Chip and I decided to shop it around to see if any other publishers might be interested in it. There’s always the possibility that HH will still decide they want it.

I had a hard time choosing until your post Lynn. Three of my four grandparents were dead by the time I was 5. My aunts, uncles, and parents are still around (thank God), but I can remember asking them one night how my set of grandparents fell in love. They didn’t know – they grew up next to each other and everyone assumed that things developed between them and they got married. I am not sure when in their lifetimes I would like to meet them, but I would love the chance to hear about their stories of childhood, falling in love, living on the farm, WWII, raising their children etc.

I know this is an odd response, but I would not like to go back in time. For me, the past has always been in the past and I live my life in the present and looking forward to the future. I laughed at Henya’s response, going back to the 80’s. I loved the music but oh, the hair and shoulder pads! πŸ™‚

Wow. This is incredibly difficult. I would love to spend a day with Jesus as a child. I wonder if he would have been special, even then. Would people have noticed? Was he normal? If so, how normal? Enough to throw a temper tantrum?

I’d like to see the Red Sea part, but not be pursued by the Egyptians.

I’d love to go back to the Regency Era…oh, say 1814, and try to get a voucher into Almack’s. πŸ˜‰

Seeing a Biblical event would be cool … but I think it would be sweet to see my parents’ wedding … =)

@ Ms. Dacus — Yay, Hawaii 5-0 (2.0) fans! =) It’s definitely different from the original … but I like McGarrett and Danno’s new bantering and such. I had always heard about Alex O’Loughlin, but I never saw him in anything until now … =)

@ Kav — I LOVED “Sue Thomas F.B.Eye! Did you watch “Doc” as well? Those were great shows –thank God for STFBEYE dvds. =)

This is something to think about, there are so many. Right now I would like to go back and spend a day with my ancestors who migrated from Ireland. Maybe the day they packed up to come to America. Like to see the green, moist landscape, and feel the wind coming up from the ocean. (They lived near the northern part of Ireland, right on the coast.) That’s today. In the next hour it might be diffeent.
This sure sets the imagination working.

At this very moment it would be May 13, 1864. To see for myself if the fire in Alexandria set by the retreating Yankees really did start in the courthouse. It consumed the entire town in just under 4 hours.
