The Road to Publication: Mile Marker 1–The Title

Monday, January 7, 2008

Well, I’ve reached the first mile marker on the road to publication: my first e-mail from the editor about the book—with the first change that needs to be made!

Friday, I received an e-mail welcoming me to the Barbour family and letting me know that they’ve decided that Happy Endings Inc. might not be the most eye-catching title on a book cover. So we’re in the process of brainstorming some other title ideas. I’ve requested that when we’ve narrowed it down to three to five titles, I would be allowed to run a contest on the blog so that y’all could vote on your favorite.

Will let you know what happens!

Congratulations on the contract! I saw your comment at Novel Journey and that’s how I discovered your good news.

As for titles, that’s been an issue with me for a while now, concerning my WIP. I working titled it KINDRED, which is also the title of a fairly well known book that’s similar to mine, so I’ll need to change it. Unfortunately, it’s carved into my heart now. But it seems publishers request title changes so frequently that I probably shouldn’t fret over it too terribly much right now.

I’ll check back here to see what titles Barbour comes up with.

A contest? Fun!!! But I do kinda like Happy Endings, Inc. A lot. It’s catchy and if I didn’t already know what it’s about I’d want to flip the book over and read the back.
