2013 – Reading in Review
Yesterday, I posted my ranked list of the audiobooks I listened to in 2013. Today, it’s time to look at the books I read. And when I say “books,” I mean ebooks. Yes, as of 2013, I’m fully an ebook convert. Everything on this list is something I read on my Kindle. I tried several new authors this year, some of whom became (obvious) favorites, while others didn’t impress me as I’d hoped. I also tried (both in listening and reading) to expand out into genres other than romance. I did a better job of it with the audiobooks than with these, but I did try.
As I did with yesterday’s list, these are ranked in order of my rating, the titles link to my review on Goodreads, and anything marked with an asterisk was a re-read.

So, I actually listened more than I read in 2013, but overall, I read so much more in the past year than I did in each of the previous four or five years (not counting books I “read” while working as an editor—as I was editing them) with 42 titles read/listened to in 12 months. I’ve already started my first two books for 2014 (audio and reading) and I have a few things floating up to the top of my TBR list . . . but we’ll get into that tomorrow.

I read 80 books last year…a combination of hardcopy and e-books (full length, short stories, and novellas). I gotta say I like reading on the Kindle Paperwhite a heck of a lot more than I ever did on the regular Kindle. 😉

I can honestly say that I read 37 books this year, I am sure it maybe a little more than that, but I can only track 37. I am a total ebook convert. I have not read a hardcopy book, except textbooks, since I got my Nook. I love being able to carry my entire library with me where ever I go and it being much lighter than one of the books. My goal this year is to read at least one pleasure book a week and keep up with my studies. We will see. As I am a student, hopefully, for the final time, can’t imagine what degree is left, most of my reading consists of audio. I do read for pleasure during my lunch on Fridays and before class, which helps, but also takes a long time to finish a book.

I am an attorney, who decided to return to law school to get her LLM (Masters of Law) in Taxation to change my practice to tax, estate planning and probate. Right now, I am mainly practicing in estate planning and probate, but once I graduate, again, I will be a tax attorney, as well. Getting things started to do taxes this year, hopefully.

I would chalk this trip to school up to mid-life crisis, if it hadn’t taken me so long to figure out what I wanted to be (42, almost 43.) Going to school at night is a lot harder in the 40’s than it was in the 20’s.

I know what you mean . . . after dropping out at age 21, I went back to college at 29. I finished my master’s degree the month after I turned 35. (And, in the several years that followed that, I wrote ten additional “theses” (after all, Stand-In Groom was my master’s thesis). I’m considering returning to grad school to take 18 hours of courses in a traditional English master’s program to make me qualified to teach full-time if I choose to go that route. But the idea of returning to school, even just to take one course at a time or to do it online, scares the you-know-what out of me. Just reading the course descriptions exhausts me!

I read 51 last year, mostly paper from the library. The rest were ebook. Planning to read all five Game of Thrones books year, and starting the first one when I finish my current batch from the library.

Loved the first book. Gave up about 1/3 of the way into the second. Then, after reading the story synopses for all of the (currently published) novels, I decided I was happy I’d given up on them. I’m not a big fan of authors who kill off main characters just to kill them off.
