Fun Friday: Top Five Favorite LOST Episodes
I know that there are a lot of you out there who don’t watch/care for the TV series LOST, but it’s been my favorite show for the past several years (I didn’t start watching until 3rd season, but got caught up with Seasons 1 & 2 on DVD and have been an addict ever since.) So since the final season starts on February 2, my next three Fun Friday posts are going to be dedicated to my favorite show. I’ll understand if you aren’t a fan and don’t read them. And also be warned if you haven’t caught up with all five seasons that there will be spoilers.

And now, here are my top five favorite episodes of LOST:
5. “The Incident, Parts 1 & 2”—this was the two-hour season finale of Season 5. Talk about a game changer! There were several things that put this one on the list: finally seeing Jacob for the first time—and seeing how he personally interacted with each of the main characters off island sometime during their lives; finding out what happened to Rose, Bernard, and Vincent (“We’re retired.”); discovering there are now two John Lockes—one dead, one alive; the emotional good-bye between Sawyer and Juliet; and after finally seeing Jacob, watching as Ben killed him.
4. “Greatest Hits” and “Through the Looking Glass”—Yes, technically these are two episodes (well, three, because “Through the Looking Glass” is a two-hour episode), however there’s one storyline that goes through these that’s the reason they’re on this list—and that’s Charlie’s farewell. In “Greatest Hits,” as Charlie prepares to go to his death, he writes a list of the best moments in his life—something to leave behind for Claire. Then, in “Through the Looking Glass,” he meets his end in one of the best death scenes in the series.
3. “Tricia Tanaka Is Dead”—The beginning of season three, with Jack, Kate, and Sawyer having been taken by the others, and the very heavy storylines that gave us, the tenth episode, with its focus on Hurley’s finding the “hippie car” and his determination to get it running, gave us a much needed emotional uplift. This episode gave us the “four musketeers” in Hurley, Charlie, Jin, and Sawyer (and a very humorous English lesson between Sawyer and Jin). And while we discovered a few episodes later the very dark origin of the van and the remains of “Roger Workman,” this episode stood for quite some time as my favorite.
2. “There’s No Place Like Home”—This is the three-part finale of Season 4, in which we learned how the Oceanic 6 actually got off the island and made it back to the real world. And LOTS of stuff happened in this episode—including the island moving. I entered that season’s finale extremely worried about my favorite character, Desmond, and his fate. I was pretty sure that if they killed him off at the end of the season, I wouldn’t watch the rest of the show out of protest. But I shouldn’t have worried. The Island isn’t finished with Desmond yet.
1. “The Constant”—With Desmond as my favorite character, is it any surprise that this is my favorite episode? Not only did it set up the idea of time travel, which they got into in the fifth season, but it had as its main focus the romance between Desmond and Penny. (And this episode is why the finale of the fourth season is in the #2 position—because of the resolution it gave to what happened in this episode.)

I’m pretty sure if I took the time to go look back through the DVD collection, I’d pick the very same ones. Are you at all worried about how the writers will end this crazy show, or do you have faith in them after the past five years? I’m somewhere in the middle. I know they can do some pretty hard things and that not everyone is guaranteed a happy ending, but they’ve also exceeded my expectations enough times for me to expect they’ll likely do it again, final season. I just want it to all make solid sense, whatever that ends up being.

I can’t believe the final season is upon us. This has been a crazy show from start and presumable finish.
I’ve never been able to watch Lost re-runs but once the show is over, I think I’m going to watch the show from start to finish.

I told one of my cousins last night—who e-mailed me after he finished reading the Harry Potter series—that I’m looking forward to the final season of LOST with the exact same emotions I had going into reading the last HP book . . . a mixture of excitement, anticipation, and dread. Dread because there is something in the back of my mind (my internal pessimist) that tells me that they’re not going to end it in a way that’ll make me happy.
And I feel like I’m justified in this dread. When the final (half) season of the recent incarnation of Battle Star Galactica came around, about four or five episodes out from the finale, I said to myself, “If they end this series with these people landing on Earth and becoming the ‘beginning of the human race,’ I’m gonna be really mad.” And that’s exactly what they did. It was a cop-out ending.
So I’m saying right now: if they end LOST by saying that with one push of a button, one explosion of a bomb, none of this ever happened—that the plane never crashed and that these people never had these experiences (or that this all happened in one person’s head)—I’m going to be severely disappointed.

I watched most of the first season on the Roku. It was interesting, and I can see why people like it (and that Sayid guy. OH MY GOSH. Use him as a template, please.) But there wasn’t enough Sawyer. And for such a smart show, it took itself a little too seriously. You get that many strangers in one place–there should be some more funny moments.

Oh, once they got going, they took plenty of opportunities to make fun of themselves and to weave in more light-hearted moments/stories (like my #3 pick and the episode “Some Like It Hoth” from season five—another Hurley episode in which Hurley, stuck in 1977, reveals he’s rewriting The Empire Strikes Back for George Lucas so that he doesn’t have to use Ewoks in Return of the Jedi because, “let’s face it, the Ewoks sucked, dude”).

I love Hurley. He’s the heart of this show. He’s has some of the most hilarious moments I’ve seen on TV. And I think there’s plenty of Sawyer, more so as the series progresses. He gradually became my favorite character, even over (gasp) Desmond!

I’m not into Lost, although all of my friends both online and off keep trying to persuade me into watching it. It doesn’t seem like a show I would like but who knows, I didn’t think I would like Castle but I gave it a shot and now I love it!
I hope the final season of Lost satisfies you guys! 🙂 I’m waiting for new episodes of The Vampire Diaries and the delicious eye candy that is Ian Somerhalder next week! 😀

I definitely agree with your #1 choice. that episode blew me away. I love the episode with Hurley trying to get the Hippie Van going. That was an amazing moment. I love most every episode I see so it would be hard for me to pick my favorites. Congrats on pairing them down. I think these are five fantastic episodes. I also appreciated reading the earlier cousin shout out.

I watched a bit of the first season when I had no cable and there was nothing else on. I liked it well enough but didn’t keep watching for no particular reason. Maybe someday I’ll watch more…whenever a cable channel starts showing reruns probably. 🙂

How did you even choose? I didn’t get into LOST until season Two and haven’t even seen season 1 except for the flash back stuff. I just might have to watch the whole thing over again with the new information…unless with a push of a button none of this ever happened…
But one of my favorite characters that still haunts me is Ekko! I miss him and feel like his demise came way too short and left me with too many unanswered questions. And the one episode that stands out to me the most is the one where Charlie dies. Though Ben killing Jacob rocked my boat and finding trying to follow all that time travel “evil man is really risen Locke” storyline made my head spin…and I’m not too thrilled that Locke is really dead…or is he? Guess we’ll find out.
Have you heard the rumors that Obama’s speech scheduled for Feb 2nd might knock out the LOST season premiere? I haven’t heard any more about it and thought you might know.

Those rumors have already been quashed. The State of the Union won’t take place on February 2:
“I don’t foresee a scenario in which millions of people that hope to finally get some conclusion in Lost are pre-empted by the president,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told AP. He later added, “I assume it’s a big deal at ABC.”

I’m not sure which episodes I’d pick for my top five. Maybe some of the ones that you chose. I think the title of the series is aptly named. I am absolutely lost as to what is happening after watching season 5. I watched the series online for the most part b/c I had gotten so far behind after season 1. Season 5 jumped around in time so much I was very confused. And yet, I am still intrigued and want to see what they are going to do next!

Thanks for finally providing me a summary of what is going on in this series. My son recently came home from the army and enjoys watching it. I’ve tried to watch a few episodes with him, but always felt LOST! Now I understand the background, maybe we can try this series again.

So much has happened in the span of this show that it is not possible for me to pick a favorite. I have been debating if I should go back and walk more of the old shows before we start again with the new.
I am torn on whether or not I like the pop-up video type shows or not. I love the extra info that is shared (there is no way that I could follow all the different tagents that occur). The problem is that I spend more time reading that listening to what the characters are saying. I have seen the show before by the time the pop-up version is out, but I dont’ know if I could watch a new show that way.
Only a few more days left!
