Fun Friday–An Ode to Coffee

In keeping with the “Poetry Jam” President Obama just hosted at the White House, I thought I’d give you a little free verse today on one of my addictions . . . coffee.
Coffee, coffee, coffee
I love coffee
with lots of milk and sweetener.
Don’t give it to me straight-up
that’s just gross
and flavored is better than
plain.
And dark roast only works
when I have LOTS
of stuff to doctor it with.
I don’t go for trends,
but I can always find
the closest
Starbucks.
(Ah, that Starbucks siren
staring at me with a
crown
on her head beckoning
me to come in for a
Venti Skinny Caramel Latte
whenever I can.)
Not too hot—I like to
drink not sip.
Not too cool—that’s
disgusting.
And definitely not
iced.
But frozen (with
caramel or toffee
and
chocolate chips
and
whipped cream)
is fabulous!
I love the coffee aisle at
Kroger—
smelling the freshly ground
coffee beans
perfect and new and unbrewed.
And walking past a
Starbucks
kiosk in the mall or airport
smelling it once the pungency is
released
by water.
But not on a plane! Never on an
airplane,
please! Canned air and
coffee aroma
don’t mix well!
It’s an acquired taste,
I believe. The bitterness
the aroma.
Oh, but the caffeine rush!
Filling each limb, each
finger each
toe
with tingly sensation and a
knowing
that today will be a better day
for having had
coffee.

Hahaha wow…you love coffee as much as I do. There aren’t any Starbuck’s close by so I get my coffee from McDonald’s and let me just tell you, I’m soooo addicted to the iced mochas…yumm! Iwon’t tell you to try one though since you don’t like iced coffee ๐ฆ

I think it takes a lot of strength to admit you don’t like your coffee black. Luckily, I am a pillar of strength.
Unless I have a caffiene headache, of course. Then, no milk or sugar needed. Just a fresh pot and a syringe.

That’s what you can give to me.

Cubes of cold or steaming pots.

Eek! I’m not a coffee drinker. When I moved to Colorado everyone said I’d get a taste for it. Not so much. Been here 2 and half years, and the only thing I can handle is an Lite Raspberry Mocha Frap. I can’t even take coffee ice cream. But the coffee flavored Nips are growing on me. Have you tried them? Yum!
Hope you get a good coffee fix today. ๐

You can search far and wide,
You can drink the whole town dry
But you’ll never find a beer so brown
As the one we drink in my home town
You can keep your fancy ales
You can drink ’em by the flagon
But the only brew for the brave and true
Comes from the Green Dragon!
That’s what comes to mind when I think of odes to favorite beverages.
See, your problem is you’ve never had truly fresh coffee. If you get coffee that was roasted properly by a microroaster a couple days ago and is perfectly ready to drink, and then it’s ground within 15 minutes before it’s brewed, and it’s brewed properly in a French press or a good espresso machine….well, THAT is a completely different animal than most coffee. MOST coffee drunk around the world is stale, stale, stale. There are also different kinds of coffee that have lower acidity. Jamaican Blue Mountain is expensive ($50/lb roasted) but you’ll never drink a smoother cup. There’s absolutely no acidic taste, none of that bitterness. I love some coffee in my cream, but I can drink Jamaican Blue black.
If you ever come to New England, we’ll roast you a fresh batch of Jamaican Blue, grind it fresh, and make you the best cup of coffee you’ve ever had.

I’m sad to say I don’t like coffee. Or tea. I’m really very picky. But, I do love your Ode to Coffee! It was so funny! I’m going to have my mom read it because she is addicted to the stuff.
