#FirstDraft60 Day 37: Monday Momentum–What’s Motivating You Today? #amwriting #nanowrimo

Monday, November 7, 2016

monday-momentumSo it looks like most of us had a very challenging first week and missed our daily and overall word-count goals. But not only is it the beginning of a new week, it’s a new day with new chances to get motivated and start gaining/regaining momentum.

So here are three things I thought might encourage all of us and remind us that everything before now is past. It’s only the future we can change and make better.
.

Writing Tip #10: YOU are your best source of motivation!

No matter how many writing groups you join, no matter how active you are in them, no matter how many blogs you write and read and comment on, no matter how many writers’ forums you participate in, when it comes down to it, writing is a solitary venture. Unless you put YOUR butt in YOUR chair and start committing words to paper (whether electronic or wood pulp), your story will not get written. more . . .

WRITE: An Inspirational Acrostic

  • WRITE—Wonderfully
Wonder. I believe all writers need to view the world around them with a sense of wonder. more . . .
  • WRITE—Rejoice!
Reach out. Writing can be such a solitary pursuit. more . . .
  • WRITE—with Integrity
Integrity. It takes years, decades, to build your reputation as a person of integrity. And only one wrong word or deed to ruin it. more . . .
  • WRITE—Technically
Technical. . . .I’m talking about writing our novels with technical accuracy. Study the craft. Study grammar. Study a style book. Study other authors’ books. more . . .
  • WRITE—Engage!
Effort. Writing isn’t easy. . . .There are a lot of people who want to write, but there are a lot more who want to have written. They don’t want to put the time in to sit at the computer for hours and hours composing the story, then twice or three times as many hours editing and revising and critiquing. This is when everyone who wants to “be a writer” learns whether it’s truly their life’s work, a job, or just a hobby. more . . .

Assignment: What is motivating you today? How will you build momentum to strive toward your goal(s) this week?

I posted this on yesterday’s blog, but thought I’d share it here, too, since it is more about momentum & motivation.

I ended up staying up WWAAAAYYYY too late Sunday night/Monday morning . . . but it’s a win—I ended up with a total of 2,706 words for “Sunday” (I’m calling it Sunday because I’m actually going to go to bed between now (4 a.m.) and when “Monday” starts (around 10 or 11 a.m.). So, yay–back on track!

My motivation is this weekend. It’s a 3-day weekend, and my husband said we’re going to Canada for at least part of the time. That means little writing time so I have to get lots done before our short trip. I can already taste the Time Horton’s.

lol I once never cared about Tim Horton’s and then I met my husband who went there at least twice a day, just for an ice capp if nothing else and now I can’t believe I once spent two years living in a town where the closest Timmies was an hour away! lol
It’s a long weekend here in Canada too (we just call it Remembrance Day instead of Veterans Day) but for me it’s not just 3 days but 4 as my daughter’s school has made Monday a Non-Instructional/Professional Development Day.
Enjoy your trip and your Timmies! 😀

My toddler pulled her late nap trick again (because she’d has an earlier than normal start to her day because of church and then didn’t nap when she normally would does on the way home from church) so I was up super late (2:30 am by the time I went to sleep)…and I have zip to show for it. So now, on top of being sick I’m exhausted and the only thing keeping me awake is tea – feeling motivated is definitely down the drain. My husband came home and ended up asking me how I was since I guess I wasn’t looking good and I replied “I’m feeling dizzy and lightheaded” and then I grimaced at myself and said “Those mean the same thing, I feel so s.m.r.t. now” lol
However, I’m off to pick up my daughter from band so I’m going to sit my butt down as soon as I get back and write for at least an hour. I found that bit in the Writing Tip #10 article link about taking breaks and getting up after an hour to do a couple things so immensely freeing because I’ve been treating it like a law that once I sit down I can’t get up again until I’ve hit my daily word count goal…which I think has been rather counter-productive! lol

I’m so sorry to hear that you’re both sick and tired. :-/ Hopefully things will turn around soon on that front. Get some rest, if you can!

Yesterday, the idea of sitting down to write only 200 words and then making myself get up and do something else, then come back for 200 more words, while, yes, resulted in a very late night (early morning?), but it also resulted in the motivation to be able to hit my daily goal plus a couple hundred. So, yes, definitely, don’t tie yourself to the computer trying to force the words to come. Sometimes the best ideas and motivation come when we’re away from the computer doing something else.

For sure, thanks! I’m feeling much better today after getting to sleep even earlier than normal last night! 😀 I got up, got my oldest off to her school bus and wrote. It didn’t come easily really but I still wrote and then since my toddler was still asleep I decided to rest a bit more and now I’m going to dive back in for a bit then take a break before the first Timer Tuesday sprint starts. 🙂

Just finished a 1k1hr sprint and wrote 1,507 words. I’m hoping I can stay awake long enough tonight to get another 1k words in so that I meet my 2,500-word goal for the day. If not, at least I wrote 1,500 words!

Last night my motivation was to just not quit. I wanted to at least write something. I spent an hour writing longhand and really reconnected to my story.
