What book(s) did you finish reading (or listening to) since the last update?
I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump over the last five or six weeks—it’s hard to find anything that interests me right now. But I did (sort of) finish three:
The Ranger by Monica McCarty. 1 star, DNF. When I was making notes on the Kindle within the first couple of pages of “Ugh” and “Get over it” when the hero is having stirrings down under at the mere sight of the heroine, I knew I probably wasn’t going to enjoy it. I was right. I gave up around 40%.
The Writer’s Guide to Everyday Life in the Middle Ages: The British Isles, 500 to 1500 by Sherrilyn Kenyon. 3 stars. There really isn’t much content to this book—and most of it was stuff I already knew from reading medieval romances since I was twelve. However, the bibliographies at the end of each chapter are worth the $1.99 for the Kindle version.
His Bonnie Bride by Hannah Howell. 2 stars—but only because the audiobook was narrated by Ashford MacNab, one of my favorite readers. This book was horrible. Click through to read my whole review.

The Hero’s Lot (The Staff and the Sword, #2) by Patrick Carr
The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet by Bernie Su and Kate Rorick (a.k.a., historical romance novelist Kate Noble); audiobook read by Ashley Clements (a.k.a., Lizzie Bennet in the webseries). I’m actually waiting to start this one on Thursday when I’ll be in the car for a while.
What’s the next book on your To Be Read stack/list?
I’m sure I’m going to want to read A Draw of Kings as soon as I finish The Hero’s Lot.
There are a few new-to-me historical romance authors I need to get around to: Erin Knightley, Kate Noble, Danelle Harmon, Jenny Barden, Lynn Kurland, Maya Banks, and more. And then there are a bunch of categories in my 2014 Reading Challenge list I haven’t gotten around to yet, either. So, I guess it’s kind of up in the air.

Today a book I’ve been waiting on for 15 months FINALLY came out, and downloading it was the first thing I did when I woke up. It’s Sherrilyn Kenyon’s League series, Born of Fury. She switched publishers for it, back to St. Martin’s who does Dark-Hunter, because Grand Central wanted her to cut the novel in half. Which she refused to do, because she knows her readers and that her 600+ page novels are our favorites.
Next will be the fashion consultant read-through on Roseanna White’s next book. After that it’ll probably be more Dark-Hunter, with a Psy-Changeling or two tossed in for variety.

I’m currently reading The Pursuit of Mary Bennett by Pamela Mingle. It’s a P&P sequel starring Mary Bennett and is in first person. I’m really enjoying it so far. Everybody is in character; the dialogue isn’t too modern (a few places); not a bodice-ripper so far. There are very few decent JA sequels out there that I’m happy to read something clean and in keeping with the characters. I’m not very far into it, so I may have to eat my words. We’ll see!
Next up is <Still Life by Louise Penny. It’s a cozy mystery set in Québec, Canada.

I am currently reading The Dance Master by Julie Klassen. The hero in the story is a dance and fencing master who is forced by circumstances to move to an area where dancing isn’t allowed. The characters and description drew me in immediately, so I’m settling into a great summer read. The Headmistress of Rosemere by Sarah Ladd was a 5 star book. The characters were well developed and I liked the setting near the moors.

Books read in June
Betrayal, by Robin Lee Hatch–Book 2 in a series–It was a story about being able trust, after each character was betrayed by a parent.
Mr. Popper’s Penguins–A book I probably should have read as a child and never had. I loved it. It was a light and easy read.
Full Steam Ahead, by Karen Witemeyer–This is a great story about trying to be more than God wants you to be and realizing that you only have to be who God made you to be.
Dead Lawyers Tell no Tales, by Randy Singer–A legal thriller about revenge and God’s grace. He never fails with his stories.
An Amish Christmas–novella collection–light and cheerful.
A Place in His Heart, by Rebecca DeMarino
Currently Reading
Suzanna’s Garden, by Debbie Macomber–Book 3 in Blossom Street Series
An Amish Love–collection of novellas-audio book.
Next to Read
The Last Plea Bargain, by Randy Singer
