Iconic American Eats – A State-by-State List
Did they get your state’s food right? Because I’ve never heard of the one they listed for Tennessee. Not Memphis-style barbecue? Chicken biscuits? Goo-Goo Clusters? (They did, however, peg two of the states I grew up in: Alaska and New Mexico with two of my absolute favorite foods in the world; for Louisiana, though, there are so many iconic dishes other than the one they picked that I’d like to know their methodology for picking it—other than that it originated in New Orleans, and most people don’t know there’s a full state outside of N.O. Oh, and when I think of South Carolina, I think of shrimp and grits, not the one they chose.)

Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” is one of my favorite art images (it’s even on the sun-shade for my car). So seeing someone set up thousands of dominoes in the design of this famous painting—just for the sake of knocking them down—is fabulous.

For you, Hokey Pokey is a children’s dance. For us in New Zealand, it’s a flavour of icecream (vanilla, with lots of lovely pieces of toffee).

Iola, its a dance here but also an icecream flavour. I love the New Zealand Hokey Pokey ice cream it is so yummy.

I think they got Kentucky’s food right. Although I would have chosen Derby Pie or Burgoo. Probably because I actually like both of those, while I don’t like a Hot Brown.

I’d never heard of Hot Brown until Bobby Flay featured it on an episode of Throwdown on Food Network. I guess sixteen years in Nashville hasn’t exposed me to as much culturally about this part of the country as I’d thought!

They pegged Virginia (my birth state) and Maryland (my raising state) and I suppose Oregon (my adopted state), although I’m not a big blackberry/marionberry fan. I pick huckleberries and make those into pies and cakes.
My mouth still waters at the memory of Virginia smoked ham, on a biscuit or not.

Ham-n-biscuits are quite popular in Tennessee, too. In fact, even though I lived in NoVA for almost four years, I’d never heard of/eaten them before moving to Nashville. Crabcakes for MD came as NO surprise to me. I haven’t touched one since I moved away from the mid-Atlantic area.
I was shocked that it wasn’t huckleberries, as that’s the fruit everyone from the Oregon area whom I know talks about all the time.

A muffaletta? Seriously? It ought to be gumbo or boiled crawfish. Not a muffaletta! Come on. With all the amazing food we have they pick a SANDWICH? I don’t even like them. Salami and pastrami are NOT native to Louisiana, and that’s pretty much the only meat they come with these days.
Mud pie for Mississippi, oh yes! My aunt makes a mud pie cake that’s so rich and yummy.
My favorite version of Van Gogh’s Starry Night is the exploding TARDIS painting from the Pandorica episodes. Think Geek has it on a t-shirt and I need it.

I think they had Tennessee completely wrong. Memphis BBQ has to be the one.
As for my home state? Well, we all know the Philadelphia Cheesesteak is God’s sandwich. 🙂
