Fun Friday–10 Life Lessons Learned from Watching Crime and Paranormal Shows

Friday, June 15, 2012

In my spare time recently, I’ve been rewatching favorite episodes of TV shows like Criminal Minds, Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hawaii Five-0, etc. Because I have this love of both crime/procedural shows and paranormal kick-’em-up shows, I’ve learned some very important life lessons that I thought I should pass along.

10. In Hawaii, if someone doesn’t drive a General Motors vehicle, they must be a villain.

9. Never trust the demon or vampire who swears they’re on your side and they just want to help you. They’ll always bite you in the end (figuratively or literally).

8. Every town in America, no matter the size, apparently has a fleet of brand-new, black Chevy Suburbans just waiting for a super-elite team from the FBI to come and solve one case.

7. Don’t ever have a romantic relationship with someone on your “team.” It never ends well.

6. Partners with whom you share witty repartee are VITAL TO YOUR SURVIVAL. Treat them well!

5. What’s dead should stay dead. But what’s buried doesn’t always stay buried.

4. Never have sex (clandestine or otherwise) outside. You’ll either find a dead body or you’ll be attacked by a serial killer, vampire, werewolf, demon, or Wesen.

3. It’s possible for two people with one or two shovels to dig a rectangular hole (complete with perfect 90-degree corners), with only a small pile of dirt beside it, to unearth a coffin . . . and not be covered in dirt from head to toe when finished.

2. Never, ever say, “Things can’t get any worse,” because that’s the invitation for things to get worse—because things always get worse.

And the numero uno, most important thing I’ve learned . . .

1. The big-name guest star is ALWAYS THE MURDERER! (Or almost always.) When are these guys going to figure that out???

Just because I can.
.
Just because I want to.

Kaye, I have often wondered if the jet for the Criminal Minds folks was big enough to carry their own escalades.

Dating at work. – From my own experience, I have always found what Darrell Royal said about passing in football applied to dating co-workers
“only three things can happen and 2 of them aren’t good.”

That was funny… and true. I love your “Just Because I Can” and “Just Because I Want To.” And when it comes to Supernatural… I had never seen that show. I just don’t get into dead things living. I was working on the LIS novel and could NOT find a template for the hero. I knew what he looked like, I just couldn’t find a real world example. UNTIL… I walked in the gym one day and he was on all four of the big TV screens in the cardio room. Freaked. Me. Out. I had to go home, get on the internet, figure out what shows were on at that time and narrow it down… until I figured out it was Jensen Ackles on Supernatural. 🙂

You and my husband would have fun watching those types of shows together. You both notice the same sorts of things. I think it was “24” where he said that the good guys use PC’s and the bad guys use Macs, or maybe the other way around. Anyway, that’s the sort of thing he picks out of TV shows 🙂 Sending him a link to your list now! Thanks for the laugh!

I completely agree with you. In the 80’s, the “bad” kids always wore black leather and said s-o-b without remorse (gasp).

Excellent list. I’ve seen a couple episodes of Supernatural but never watched it all that much. When it premiered, someone I really did not like was beyond obsessed with it and it was ruined for awhile for me. But since it’s on Netflix I’ll probably give it a try again.

And if you’re never seen Jensen Ackles without his shirt, ooh mama! He did an Abercrombie and Fitch photo shoot a few years ago. Talk about needing a fan!

There is a lone exception to #7….Mulder and Scully are currently living on a Caribbean beach somewhere happy. Sure, they went through all kinds of hell to get there…but it IS a happy ending. 😉
