Writer’s Window: Julie Lessman

Monday, September 6, 2010

Congratulations to Jolanthe, who won last week’s drawing

———————————————————————————————

Talk about taking the historical romance scene by storm! With her first “Passion” series (officially, The Daughters of Boston: A Passion Most Pure, A Passion Redeemed, A Passion Denied), Julie Lessman burst onto the historical romance scene and hasn’t looked back. I was so tickled to get to meet Julie at ICRS this year, and look forward to all future opportunities to spend time with her!

One lucky commenter will win your choice of one of Julie’s books—including her brand-new release, A Hope Undaunted, the first book in her new Winds of Change series. Deadline for leaving a comment to enter the drawing is Friday. Be sure to indicate in your comment if you wish to enter and which of the books you’d like to receive if you win. (You do not need to include your e-mail address in the body of your comment—just make sure it’s correct when you sign in to leave your comment.)

A Hope Undaunted

The 1920s are drawing to a close, and feisty Katie O’Connor is the epitome of the new woman–smart and sassy with goals for her future that include the perfect husband and a challenging career in law. Her boyfriend Jack fits all of her criteria for a husband—good-looking, well-connected, wealthy, and head-over-heels in love with her. But when she is forced to spend the summer of 1929 with Cluny McGee, the bane of her childhood existence, Katie comes face to face with a choice. Will she follow her well-laid plans to marry Jack? Or will she fall for the man she swore to despise forever?

What do you like best about being a writer?

Writing dramatic, breathless and compelling love scenes. Sigh.

What do you like least about being a writer?

The human focus on contests wins, 5-star ratings and sales numbers. Yuck!

Pop, Soda, or Coke? What do you call it, and what’s your favorite variety?

I call it “soda,” and I don’t drink it as a rule, but if I did, it would be Ruby Red Squirt.

Describe your favorite pair of shoes.

Okay, this is embarrassing! My favorite shoes are orthopedic flip-flops with a built-in arch, at least ever since I walked five days a week, 30 minutes a day for months on my treadmill … in my house slippers!!! I found out how realllllly stupid that was when I strained my arch. Now, I don’t go anywhere or do anything without decent shoes with arches.

What’s the most fun/interesting/crazy/scary/unique hands-on research you’ve done for a book?

Contorted my body on the floor in a really awkward position (don’t ask!!), trying to get the positioning right in my mind in order to write it.

Candles. We all have them. But do you burn them? What scents are your favorite?

Almost nonstop by my computer — I’m a candle freak! Favorite scents? Peach, black cherry, hazelnut.

Have you ever re-gifted something someone’s given you?

Uh, yeah. But only if it’s something that I know the person would really like.

If you were to write a novel about what your life would have been like if you’d become what you wanted to be at eight years old, what kind of character would the story be about?

A gorgeous and buxom Amazon woman named Scarlett who went on to be Miss America.

What makes you happy?

Loving God, writing, and anything made with peaches.

What makes you nervous?

      Deadlines.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received?

It’s not about you, it’s about Him.

What’s your biggest dream for the future?

As an author? No different than any other writer — The New York Times Bestseller List.
As a person? To be the woman God wants me to be—a daily struggle, I assure you.

Tell us about what you’re currently writing (or your newest release, or both).

A brand-new series that concludes the O’Connor saga! The Winds Of Change Series begins with Katie O’Connor’s story, A Hope Undaunted, during the wild and reckless Roaring ’20s and the Great Depression. Book 2, A Heart Revealed, tells the forbidden love story of Sean O’Connor and Emma Malloy. Book 3, A Soul Restored (working title), will be Steven O’Connor’s story during the exciting era of Prohibition, speakeasies, dance marathons, gangsters, G-men, and era criminals like Bonnie & Clyde and John Dillinger.

Where can people find out more about you/connect with you online?

Fun interview, ladies 🙂 We call it “soft drink” down under! Please don’t include me in the draw – I have a copy on its way to me.

I love candles, too – apple and cranberry are favs for me and vanilla – sweet!

Enjoy your day, Kaye & Julie

Julie, you certainly travel around in cyberspace, don’t you? LOL.
Kaye, have I ever said how much I love your quirky questions? I bet it’s even fun for the writer being interviewed to answer them.

And Julie, so glad that you didn’t realize your eight-year-old dreams!!!! My world wouldn’t be the same without the O’Connor clan, so I have to admit I much prefer you as an ‘edgy’ writer. Counting the days until I can read A Hope Undaunted.

What a wonderful interview. I live in the part of the country that calls it “soda”…moved about 150 miles away and they thought I wanted an ice cream drink.
I love your writing Julie, you are truly gifted and you deserve to be on the NY Times Best Sellers’s list!
Good Luck and God Bless! Maureen

Julie, this reminds me of all those black and white movies I watched with my grandpa when I was a kid. Edward G Robinson, Robert Stack. The oldies!
I’m looking forward to these next three books.

The 1920s/1930s are definitely the “in” era right now. Even the BBC is moving that direction with their historical/costume dramas. So glad to see Christian fiction ahead of the trends!

Hey, REL, soooo fun to see you here, my friend!! And, yep, your signed copy of AHU is winging its way Down Under as we speak. And ooooo … I LOVE cranberry too!!!

CYNTHIA!!! Hey, girl, you’re making the rounds — thank you!! You’re gonna win this book yet, you mark my words! 🙂

KAV … yep, before I’m through promoting the launch of A Hope Undaunted, you people are going to be REAL sick of me, guaranteed!! 🙂 I usually do a big spurt of blog giveaways with every book release, but since this is a series launch as well, Revell and I are going all out with a Facebook party/chat in October where attendees can win a Kindle with wi-fi and preloaded with my books, Amazon and Starbucks gift certificates every 10 minutes and a bunch of other great prizes. Details will be in my next newsletter, which I hope to send out this week, so if you’re not signed up for it, you can do so at my website, okay? Thanks, Kav, for dropping by!

Aw, MAUREEN, what a wonderful thing to say … not true, but wonderful!! 😉 It’s pretty tough to climb to the NY Times BS list unless you write Amish or your name is Karen Kingsbury, Jan Karon or Francine Rivers!! But a girl can dream, right??? But thanks SOOO much for your faith in me!!

JULIA … No, no … did not READ Gone With the Wind at 8, read it at 12. BUT … I took liberties with Kaye’s question because I just LOVE the name Scarlett and it conjures up my dreams as a kid pretty well. Once I saw the movie at the age of 16, I’d pose in the mirror with my eyebrow cocked like Scarlett, which was pretty laughable since I was NOT attractive at all!! I don’t think I was as selfish as Scarlett was, but I was as dramatic and a wee bit conniving, most definitely! 🙂

DEB!!! Always great to see you, girl! And, oh, did you think Robert Stack from the Untouchables was as hot as I did???? That’s kind of how I envision Steven O’Connor — the tall, dark, dedicated type, his eye on the law. Whew … give me a fan, quick!! 🙂 Thanks for dropping by, my friend.

ADRIENNE … Thanks, sweetie, and trust me — I would LOVE to include you in this giveaway, too, so consider it done. Don’t know if you have read any of my books before, but if not, I always recommend new readers start with book 1 of “The Daughters of Boston” series A Passion Most Pure due to a number of big surprises that would be ruined if these two series are read out of order. Don’t get me wrong — they are all stand-alone books, but a much better read when done so in order. So if you win on Kaye’s blog, I would be happy to send you APMP instead, unless you are set on AHU. Thanks for entering the contest!

    Hugs,
    Julie

I watched the TV version of The Untouchables that came on in the early 1990s. “Fell in love with” Agent Paul Robbins. The show ended after two seasons . . . but wouldn’t you know, that gorgeous man in a secondary-character role showed up again on TV a few years later—as Commander Harmon Rabb on J.A.G.!

AMEE … thank you SO much for your very kind words. I suppose if there were a listing on the NY Times BS list for VERY passionate Christian romance, I could possibly be in the top ten … but ONLY because there aren’t that many ultra-passionate Christian romances out there. I can only think of about four or five other authors who write as edgy as I do in the Christian romance department, so maybe I would make the list … I said “maybe”! Good luck in the contest, sweetie.

Grin … only you, SHERRINDA, would bring that up to embarrass me. No, I guess that’s not fair because I’m pretty capable of embarrassing myself … don’t need any help in that department!!

Okay, since you asked … I was writing the picnic scene in A Passion Denied, where Lizzie is sitting on a blanket and Tom is lying beside her, staring up at her with his head in his hand and elbow propped. I actually sprawled down on the floor in front of my desk, trying to capture his position and Lizzie’s so that I could write it appropriately. Fortunately my hubby, who shares our tiny office with me, was gone at the time.

When writing A Hope Undaunted, I needed to get positioning on 5’2″” Katie standing on tiptoe while she attempted to kiss 6’3″ Cluny McGee, to see if she could even reach him with her lips. So I said to my husband (who sits two feet behind me), “Keith, can you stand up, please?” “What?” he says, a crimp in his brow. “Stand up — I need to try and kiss you.” He stood up (gladly, I like to think), and I lifted on tiptoe to see where my 5’3″ height would come up to his 6’1″, just to get the measure on Katie and Cluny. Trust me, writing is not the ONLY fun thing about being an author … 🙂

    Hugs,
    Julie

Sherrinda … no problem with my family considering me “crazier than I am” … the already are more than convinced. My daughter, in particular — the one whom I modeled Katie O’Connor after — likes to tease me unmercifully. Fortunately, I already know how crazy I am, so I take it all in stride. Can’t argue with the truth, after all! 🙂

Unfortunately, although she had written a 6-book series prior to the series I read, only books 1 and 6 were still in print, so I just ordered book 1, and BOY, was I glad I did. I did not care for book 1 AT ALL, and I was astounded just how much this author had improved from book 1 to book 7, 8 and 9!!! That said, I now only buy ONE book in a series at a time because you NEVER know … 🙂

And by the way, Barb, my newsletter goes out tomorrow, God willing, so if you have not signed up for it, please do as I have EIGHT giveaways going on the rest of September and more coming in October, so the odds are with you, my friend.

      Hugs,
      Julie

Thank you, Kaye, for doing this interview. After reading it, I went over to Julie’s website and just HAD to go out yesterday to get the first book. Three bookstores later, I spent the rest of Labor Day reading when I should have been grading papers! 🙂 Ordered the next two books, so I guess I will have to grade those papers now!

TAMMY, you sweet thing, you!!! That’s what a like to see — a take-charge kind of gal who knows what she wants and goes out to get it … uh, especially if it’s my (or Kaye’s) book!! 🙂

But, oh-oh … three bookstores??? It took THREE bookstores to find A Passion Most Pure??? YIKES … let’s hope they ran out and not the other way around …

But seriously, THANK YOU, Tammy, for buying my book!! If you enjoy it, let me know, okay? And if not … uh, never mind. 🙂

      Hugs,
      Julie

        Julie,

I did enjoy it. I keep re-reading the ending in anticipation of the others coming which should be here tomorrow. As for those book stores . . . they probably were just sold out. I did find A Passion Denied, but wanted to start at the beginning! 🙂

Great Q&A . . . (By the way, Mrs. Lessman, I don’t want to clog up the entries for the contest they’re having on Ms. Casey’s blog, thank you for responding to my comment on there –I really appreciate it! ) =D

Talk about a “God moment” –I always download the free Kindle Christian Fiction books the publishers make available, and it turns out I have “A Passion Most Pure” on my computer! If only there wasn’t school right now . . . LOL. I don’t know which book I’d like to get . . . is it okay not to put a title down yet?

Thank you for putting this drawing together Ms. Dacus!

WHOO-HOO, LDK (Lady Dragon Keeper), sooooo glad you took advantage of the free Kindle download on APMP a few months back — VERY cool! And I’m hoping Revell will do another one on book 2, A Passion Redeemed, so if they do, I will mention it in my almost daily “Journal Jots” on my website, where I chat with my reader friends, so you may want to check that every now and then or follow me on Twitter or Facebook, because I will always mention things like that on there, okay?

And, grin, don’t know if it was a “God moment,” but it was definitely a “Julie moment,” because I am SOOO thrilled we will be able to connect through my books! God’s abundant blessings on your school year, LDK!

      Hugs,

Thanks Mrs. Lessman! =D I just got your September e-newletter, so I must have signed up just in time. I actually just finished reading “APMP” . . . =) Wow –I totally enjoyed it! I’m glad your writing books about the rest of the O’Connor kids . . . I’m bugging my sister to enter these book drawings now. 😉

I loved the interview! Lots of fun! I have read all of Julie’s books. Just finished A Hope Undaunted. Loved it! Wonderful story. Loved the new character Gabe. She had me laughing. Do we really have to wait a whole year for Book 2?? lol Anyway, thanks for sharing your God-given talent with us all!

Oh, by the way, if my name is drawn, I would love to receive any of her books. Surprise me!

Oh, LORI, I am SOOO thrilled you enjoyed Undaunted!! As you probably know, it is my favorite of all the books I’ve written, so I feel like a proud mama when people say they like it! 🙂

And bless your heart, I wondered if anyone would think Gabe (Gabriella Dawn Smith … named after the reader friend who won my newsletter contest to have a character named after her!) was as adorable as I thought she was, ESPECIALLY that scene between her and Katie. And did you notice I got the name of my all-time favorite novel, Gone With the Wind, in that scene??? 🙂

Unfortunately, Lori, I am no Kaye Dacus and Mary Connealy who are gifted with both talent and speed. My next book, A Heart Revealed, which is Emma and Sean’s story, does not come out until September 2011, but I am happy to say that according to my husband, my crit partner and my aunt, it is my best book yet, so we shall see. My ninety-two-year-old aunt calls it a “gangbuster of a story, which made me smile.” 🙂

Hi, looks like there is some great competition to win Julies book. Julie, I read through part of the first chapter of “A Passion Most Pure” so far, and it has me hooked already. Don’t think you need to worry that I won’t like it….your books have to be just like you….fun and lovable. Just making a comment….maybe this one will be the winner!

By the way, there is an unadvertised, last-minute giveaway on Suzanne Woods Fisher’s author spotlight this Friday. Here’s the link, or you can check my website tomorrow.

And, whew, soooo glad you like the beginning of APMP … it gets better, trust me, especially the 2nd half of the book — buckle up, girl, it’s going to be a crazy ride!! 🙂

It’s funny. I don’t think I call my drinks by anything but their name. I say I want a caffeine-free coke or pepsi or whatever. Or occasionally, it’s simply, I need something acidic, which means the same thing. 🙂
Great interview. Once again, please enter me for A Hope Undaunted. I feel lucky with this one! 😛

Hi there, Miss Julie and Miss Kaye! I really enjoyed the interview, and learned some fun things about Julie!

Since a copy of Undaunted is on the way to me (THANK YOU, Julie!), I’d like to be entered to win A Passion Most Pure. When I read the DOB series, I checked them out from the library, so it would be a wonderful treat to win a signed copy. 😀

Sweet Blessings to all of you ladies here!
