Fun Friday: Fall 2009 TV Season
As I mentioned, my friend Ruth suggested I do a list again this year of all of the shows/new shows I’m watching this new TV season. And as a disclaimer, yes, I know there are lots of shows listed here. Some of them I watch all the time, some I watch occasionally. One of the reasons I watch so much TV is because it’s pretty much the only time I have when I can just let my brain shut down, between editing (which means lots of reading) and writing for a living.

Monday–Friday
Countdown with Keith Olbermann — yes, I’m a (liberal) politics junkie (though I’ve gotten to where I watch this online after it airs so I don’t have to deal with commercials)
Jeopardy! — have to have my dose of trivia for the day
Mondays
The Big Bang Theory—One of the only sitcoms I’ve ever watched regularly as an adult. Not quite as good this season as last season, but still LOL funny. 
Castle—I loved Nathan Fillion in Firefly so this one was a must-see for me last year. Though I thought last season dragged halfway through (I missed several episodes), they ended on such a high note, I had to come back and watch this season. It seems like they’ve gelled much more as a cast this year and even though Rick Castle’s involvement with the cases they’re handling is unrealistic, it’s still fun to watch.
Tuesdays
Catching up with stuff that recorded earlier and/or watching some of the “Occasionals” listed below.
Wednesdays (a.k.a. “Reality” TV Night)
America’s Next Top Model—I’m not really sure why I keep watching this show, but there’s something addictive about it (and I’m not into fashion at all!). I hope that with as much press as plus-size (well, average size—10/12) models are getting recently that they’ll do a cycle focused on women who are average to slightly larger, since this season they’re focusing on women under 5’7″.
Top Chef—You cannot have been reading this blog very long if you don’t know that I absolutely adore this show. I’ve been a loyal watcher since the first season. I even watched the entire Masters series they did this summer. This season, I’m rooting for Kevin, Bryan, Jennifer, and Laurine. We’ll see two of those four in the finale.
Thursdays
Flash Forward—This show, when the previews started airing a few months ago, was being touted as the replacement for LOST (which ends this spring). Replacement may be too strong a word—but WOW! This is a fantastic show. Okay, it helps that each week is an exercise in picking out the actors/actresses who’ve had recurring roles on LOST (the primary one being Sonya Walger, who plays Penny, Desmond’s squeeze). Last night, Kim Dickens, who played Cassidy (the mother of Sawyer’s daughter) on LOST was the primary crossover guest star . . . but they keep promising us that Dominic Monaghan is going to eventually show up. Oh, and hello Jack Davenport!
Vampire Diaries—Yes, a few weeks ago, I called for the end of books about vampires. And here I am watching one of the many TV shows inspired by one of those series. (Another LOST connection—Ian Sommerholder, who played ill-fated Boone on LOST plays Damon, the bad vampire, on this show). This one is still iffy for me—the teen angst is starting to grate on my nerves. But I do like the lead female character and her African American best friend much better in this show than in True Blood.
Project Runway—What is the deal with everyone fawning over Logan? He’s not that hot, even if he was the only young, unmarried straight guy on the show.
The Mentalist—This is another one that lost me midway through the year last year but ended with such a bang that I had to come back this year. And it’s been good so far. We’ll see how long they can sustain the “Jane must catch serial killer who killed his family” as a subplot, though. After a while, it’ll just become ridiculous.
Fridays
Dollhouse—At the end of last season, the intrepid former FBI Agent Paul Ballard (played so well by the lovely Tahmoh Penikett) had infiltrated the Dollhouse. This season, I’m so happy that they’ve now made him a handler—which hopefully will result in more screen-time for the template of the hero of my next contemporary novel.
Medium—This has always been an on-again/off-again show for me. I never felt like I had to watch it every week. But I’m giving it another shot now that it’s moved to CBS. And tonight—the absolute sexiest man in the entire world, Oded Fehr, is guest-starring (as the bad guy—he does bad guys so well!). Of course, I’ll be at a formal dinner chatting up my books, but this is why we have DVRs, people!
Numb3rs—I’ve been a fan since season one. This show for me isn’t about the cases or the fancy math they use to solve them. This show is about the characters and the relationships, and that’s what keeps me watching week after week.
Saturdays
Robin Hood—When Jonas Armstrong (Robin Hood) announced he’d be leaving the show after the end of the third season, but the producers announced the show would continue, we wondered how they’d make that work. Well, halfway through the few weeks’ worth of previews before this season started airing here in the States, they added a line to the ads/trailers: The Final Season. Even though I LOVE the new character they’ve added this season, Friar Tuck (WOW!), I absolutely HATE the new female character (Kate with the weird hair/braid headband thing) they’ve brought on because the actress playing Marian got too big for her britches and left the show after the second season (it was really hard to get worked up over her death, since she wasn’t really likable and because they’d already announced she was leaving the show before the second season ran over here).
Football—Geaux Tigers!
Sundays
Extreme Home Makeover—This is actually more of a “catch it when I can” show. It’s also one that, when it’s on, I’m usually doing other stuff, like laundry or cooking or planning my meals for the upcoming week. But it’s always interesting to see the befores and afters, as well as the families’ reactions to their new homes.
Army Wives—This is my soap opera, my alternative to Desperate Housewives. They have a tendency to wrap up the problems the characters deal with a little too easily/too neatly. And they have a tendency to have recurring conflicts—such as some threat of the army base closing down or the general and his wife having to move. But they’ve also touched on a lot of topics that are never seen or discussed outside of military-family circles, such as a female officer having to leave her six-month-old daughter behind when she is called up for a tour of duty in a war zone; how being a recruiter affects the soldier’s family; the stress that being in a top-secret squadron (Delta in this case) puts on the soldier’s family who never know where he is, when he’s coming back, or even if he’s been captured/tortured. This is one of the cable shows that runs on a different schedule—premiering when the regular season ends and running through the summer, ending in the fall—so the season finale is next week. That actually works out well, because it opens up another night of the week for me. One of the most fun episodes they’ve done to date (they’re in season 3) was a couple of weeks ago when they used the regular cast to re-enact a story being told to them by two ladies who’d lived at Fort Marshall during WWII.
Mid-Season/Spring Shows
LOST—Again, you can’t have been reading this blog very long if you don’t already know I’m a LOST addict. The season which starts in late January will be (sniff, sniff) the final season of this strangely addictive show. I was just talking about it with some colleagues over dinner the other night—two who watch it, one who doesn’t. It’s definitely one of those shows you must watch from the first episode. If you’ve always wondered what it’s all about, wait until next summer and then get the DVDs from Netflix (you can sign up for it for only as long as it takes you to go through the six seasons of the show). I’m excited with a bit of trepidation to see how they’re going to start answering all the questions they’ve spent five years raising on this show. It had better be satisfying!
V—I saw the first ad for this during Flash Forward this past week. Why did it catch my eye when I was fast-forwarding through the commercials? Because it was a closeup on the gorgeous face of Morena Baccarin—a.k.a. the template for Alaine Delacroix from Menu for Romance and A Case for Love. This is another show that they’re trying to pull LOST viewers in with the casting: Elizabeth Mitchell, who plays Juliet, was cast as one of the main characters in V. Now, those of us who grew up in the 1980s will remember that there was a miniseries followed by a short-lived TV series. According to everything I’ve seen, this is a “reimagining” of the original series.
PBS Masterpiece Classics: Emma and Cranford 2—These are the only two titles that have been confirmed for PBS’s spring Masterpiece Classics series. Emma—the first miniseries treatment of the Jane Austen novel since the late 1970s—has been airing in the UK for the past few weeks . . . to very mixed reactions by viewers. The second Cranford movie will be airing in Britain as a Christmas special, and features many of the original stellar cast members from the original miniseries. I’m really looking forward to it.

Mondays are bad for me and I can’t record and watch everything: Heroes, Gossip Girl, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Lie to Me. I’d be watching Dancing With the Stars if it fit on the DVR
Tuesdays – NCIS (when I am in the mood), NCIS: LA (if I ever get around to watching it on the DVR. I’ve already given up on The Forgotten and The Good Wife.
Wednesdays – So You Think You Can Dance (my favorite show on TV right now), and if I am in the mood Glee
Thursdays – Flashforward (really enjoying it too), Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Bones (when I feel like it), The Mentalist.
Fridays – Numb3rs (when I feel like it), Smallville, Stargate:Universe, Sanctuary.
Saturdays: Legend of the Seeker (syndication) and sometimes what ever the BBCA show is – but right now there hasn’t been anything I like to watch.
Psych – don’t know when its on, but I have it set to record.
Right now So You Think You Can Dance and Smallville are the only shows I *have* to watch. And even Smallville is starting to get really old. A lot of these shows if I don’t feel like it I don’t watch them – and the ones when I said (when I feel like it) means I have to be in the mood to watch. More often than not I might watch 5 episodes in a 22 episode season.

I’ve never gotten into any of the dancing shows. Even while using ballroom dancing as the cultural icon in A Case for Love. Just sitting there watching people dance, to music that I wouldn’t choose to listen to, holds no interest for me.
And I’m sort of like you with the DVR. I had to look several of these shows up on the various networks’ sites just to find out what night they actually air, because I usually only remember to watch them when they show up on the DVR!

I had to use the tvguide.com site! Some of the shows I don’t even remember what channel they are on.
Oh and I forgot Dollhouse. Watched it once I got home last night. The show is getting more and more fascinating.

I’m loving Paul Ballard more and more each week—which is fantastic since Tahmoh is the template for the hero of my next contemporary, which I’ll be writing in December and January.

Castle is GREATLY improved this season. The first half of last season was a bit of a drag for me, but Nathan Fillion kept me tuning in. Then things started to pick up, the cast started to gel a *bit* more, and the season finale was terrific IMO. This season, I’ve been incredibly impressed by the cast as a whole – fun and illogical as the show’s conceit may be, it’s working better and better as time goes on. I’m so glad it got a 2nd season pickup!!
The Mentalist completely lost me towards the end of last season – though the finale was good. I couldn’t STAND Patrick the 1st two eps of this season – but the episode that aired last night was really, really good IMO. It was nice to see him in a more sympathetic light for a change. And you know, I love Cho! 🙂
Did Lucy Griffiths make the call to leave Robin Hood, or was she getting written out anyway and it was a mutual decision? I can’t recall. I think one of the problems too w/ the show is that 1 of the original showrunners jumped ship this season. This show was not given the support/guidance/direction that could’ve served it better in the long run IMO. Can’t wait till Prince John’s arrival! 😉

Loved Lisbon’s comment about Van Pelt and Rigsby when Patrick hypnotized her in this past week’s episode. I like that they seem to be giving Van Pelt a little more to do this season.

Sometimes I watch Supernanny (but I detest the show. Don’t know why I watch it. I cannot fathom that there are kids who are such brats in the world). I used to like Rachel Ray until her thing became like “look at all the celebs I can cram on my show” instead of actually cooking.
Speaking of TV shows, I just “discovered” A&E’s “Jeeves and Wooster”, and I am LOVING it!!! Hugh Laurie absolutely rocks.

I’m with you on Super Nanny. If I accidentally switch to the channel it’s on (apparently Style has started airing it every day), I find myself watching it in spite of myself.

I’m catching up with Castle on Hulu.com. I never watched it because of its too late air time. So I only caught the end of last season, and the start of this season. I’ll continue to watch it on Hulu, because I go to be around 9pm (and have no means to record shows). I like Nathan Fillion, and the show is entertaining. Wonder why they don’t air it a bit earlier? Or am I that totally weird going to bed at 9pm?
Flashforward. Yes. I’m liking this one. And it comes on at 8pm!!!! Did you notice a Firefly actress in last Thursday’s ep? Took me awhile to place her.
I have Stargate Universe on probation. Watching that via Hulu, too, since I don’t have cable. Not sure I’ll stick with this one.
I’ll check out V whenever that airs (starring Elizabeth Mitchell from… LOST).
And that’s it for me until LOST Itself returns. And it’s a far far bigger load of TV watching than I’ve done in many years. Thanks to Hulu. I guess. Perhaps I should say “curse the day I discovered Hulu and got sucked into too much TV watching!” 🙂

Yes, you’re totally weird that you go to bed at 9 p.m.—but that’s coming from someone who’s (a) in the Central time zone (so we get primetime shows between 7 and 10 p.m.) and (b) who’s a night person for whom going to bed at midnight is an “early night.”
Yes, as soon as Director Wedeck’s wife appeared on screen, my first reaction was: “It’s Zoe!”

Numbers on CBS is overall a great show, but I have to watch it now online, because I can’t get CBS on my TV. Even though I bought the converter box mandated by the government earlier this year, I can only get about 2 stations on my TV. Since I’m saving money and not subscribing to cable, your overview has helped to educate me on the TV season I’m missing. Thanks! 🙂

Kaye, I’m so very, very sorry that someone equated politics with spiritual beliefs in an email to you. That was completely wrong. In fact, that email correspondent of yours was not very open-minded, and it takes intellectual curiosity to be creative!
So I guess I’ll admit that I’m surprised that “Countdown with Keith Olbermann,” is at the top of your TV list, because he has sometimes made some rather rough statements about people of faith — like this one from his book:
“He [Gibson] is one of those people who think all religions but his are mistaken. You know, the way a lot of these religious nut bag terrorists think.”

Isn’t that ironic — a statement about intolerance that sounds a little intolerant? 🙂 Yes, I too believe that other “religions” (who deny Jesus as the only way to know God) are mistaken. Good intentioned, but mistaken. But no, I really don’t feel good about being lumped in with “religious nut bag terrorists,” because I would never cause harm to another human being — because of my desire for them to have time to come to know Jesus. So I wouldn’t guess Keith and I would have a lot of spiritual views in common. Just saying. 🙂

While I don’t always agree with everything Keith says on his show, I tend to agree with most of what he has to say. And though you’re right, that comment does have a negative tone to it, he’s usually very respectful toward all religions. Where he becomes intolerant is when people use their religion to try to put others down or force their own views on other people—like the person who sent me an e-mail questioning my Christianity because of my political views. Those are the kinds of statements/people he takes issue with, just like I do.

-Make It Or Break It (yes, totally unrealistic as far as gymnastics goes, but still a good show nevertheless.)

-Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman (gospel music channel – I am ever so thankful this show is in re-run form – my all-time favorite)
-Gilmore Girls (my 2nd favorite. Deeply saddened when it was canceled before Luke and Lorelai really had a good chance, but oh well..there’s always fan fiction!)

I loved DQMW! In fact, the hero and heroine of my first completed manuscript used the templates of Brandon Douglas (Andrew) and Jessica Bowman (Colleen—though really loosely, because to watch her on screen/listen to her voice did annoy me somewhat and she was ten years younger than my character, but she had the look I wanted). I think I get that channel, so I’ll have to see if I can find it!

I’ve got a great story about DQMW(which I love by the way!)
I was at the beauty shop, waiting for my stylist while she answered the phone when I overheard a conversation from the next station. This woman was getting her hair done because she was going into the hospital–her doctor thought she had liver cancer and wanted to run some more test. I asked this woman if she had eaten any shell fish recently–and she had, shrimp caught off the gulf coast of Florida. I told her that she may want to have her doctor check her for shellfish infection as it can mimic liver cancer.
Several days later, I got a call from the beauty shop–the lady in the next station had called and wanted my phone number. Sure, I said and within a few minutes, the lady was on the phone, thanking me perfusely. The doctor did in fact find an abcess caused by tainted shellfish.
I couldn’t tell the woman that I learned that from DQMW! Just the week before, Dr. Mike was called to Boston when her mother fell ill to what the doctors thought was cancer–but not Dr. Mike! She quizzed her mother about her oyster intake and realized her mother had been infected by a shellfish. That woman at the beauty shop owes her life to DQMW!

Kaye, another Robin Hood fan right here! But we don’t get BBC America here, so I’m dying for season 3 to come out on dvd in January! 🙂
And I love Castle, too! My Monday night writing buddy and I get together at 8, write for an hour, then watch Castle together every week. It’s awesome! Except in the summer when it’s not on. 🙂 Loved reading your thoughts on these. 🙂

Having BBC-A is one of the main reasons why I have not yet been able to bring myself to switch back to basic cable from the extended-digital package—that and the fact that Comcast requires you to have the extended package to get the DVR subscription. 😦

I’m not a big TV watchers but I do have a few shows I just HAVE to watch:
MONDAYS are a big night for us–‘House’ is medically unbelievable but I love Hugh Laurie and enjoy just watching him; ‘Big Bang Theory’ which is the favorite comedy of everyone in this house. In fact, we’ve been watching the first two seasons on DVD over the last month–the Christmas episode from last year made me blow soda out of my nose, it was so funny. And ‘Castle.’ This show reminds me of ‘Remington Steele’ and Moonlighting,’ two of my favorite shows of all times.
TUESDAY–Nothing, nada, zinch.
WEDNESDAY–Again, nothing.
THURSDAY–Bones–even though last year’s season finale was horrible. One of three shows that had the main characters halucinating(Bones, House and Grey’s Anatomy.)
FRIDAY–‘The Soup,’ the vice in my television schedule.
SATURDAY–Looks like we have a bunch of ‘Robin Hood’ lovers on this site and up until last season, I would have agreed. I, for one, hated seeing Marion leave(she got her own televsion show) and still wonder if Robin hasn’t jumped the shark. Tuck is great and I guess Kate is all right but WHAT IS WITH HER HAIR?
SUNDAY–‘Army Wives,’ though I wished they would work a bit on their storylines. Joan’s story is great and I love Roxie but do you think a man would forgive his wife as fast as Denise’s husband did when she cheated on him? On another note, I loved the WWII show but as someone who writes in that historical time, I was a little disappointed in how the writers protrayed the role of the WASP–in real life, the character Denise was playing wouldn’t have been seen that entire episode because she would have been traveling the country or training recruits.

We do have a lot of Robin Hood fans here—more than I suspected!
And that’s exactly what I meant when I mentioned that they tend to resolve the conflicts on Army Wives a little too quickly/easily. And what I want to know is: what is the point of having Claudia Joy diagnosed with diabetes, except to have her character all of a sudden turn crabby and mean to her family and friends? Having lived with my parents when my dad was diagnosed about fifteen years ago, I know what it’s like to adjust to that, and I’m not thrilled with they way they portrayed it. And now it’s just a non-issue.
I thought the whole Denise-affair storyline was stupid to begin with. But it was good to see Catherine Bell in a uniform again (longtime JAG fan here—from the very first season before Catherine Bell replaced Tracy Needham as the female lead).

A pastor who makes that statement is certainly controversial in today’s culture, but is Olbermann really using a church sermon excerpt to argue that MacArthur is “The Worst Person in the World runner-up” — when there are terrorists and dictators and murderers who could easily make the “Worst” list?

I’m not going to argue with you about this, that is not the purpose of this blog nor an activity I participate in. You are entitled to your opinion (though I’d think more highly of that opinion if you were brave enough to put your real name to it) and the freedom to express it on your own blog or website, as is Keith Olbermann, as am I. And with that, I put an end to this thread of discussion. Any further attempts to start a “debate” about what Keith Olbermann has said on his show will be moderated.

1. Absolutely. It’s your blog, and a great one. I apologize for going down the analytical road on politics, but it’s one of my hobbies. I enjoy looking for the rest of the story — and I guess that’s why I love fiction, too!
2. Political commentators on all sides are simply fascinating. 🙂 I love looking at their word choices, favorite targets, style of discussion, verbal mannerisms, and more. Talk about a character study!
3. I remain adamantly opposed to the email you received connecting political views with faith in Christ. That was wrong on so many levels. The simple truth of the gospel is still the same: John 3:16. Thank God that discussions about government and politics will never be more important than that!

A&E = Arts & Entertainment
According to bbc.co.uk, the BBC “is a public service broadcaster, established by a Royal Charter and funded by the licence fee that is paid by UK households.”
According to the A&E Television Networks website (AETN.com): “A&E Television Networks (AETN) a joint venture of The Hearst Corporation, Disney-ABC Television Group and NBC Universal, is an award-winning, international media company offering consumers a diverse communications environment ranging from television programming, to home videos/DVDs and music CDs, to Web sites, as well as supporting nationwide educational initiatives.

A&E used to broadcast a lot of the BBC shows and movies. But they’ve moved away from that in the last several years—more toward “reality” shows. And I have to wonder if that’s because now so many cable and satellite providers are carrying BBC-America.

My faves are:
Castle – Nathan Fillion is great (I also loved Firefly). I particularly enjoy the dynamic between him and his daughter. And the interplay between Castle and Becket is so much fun. This is a show my son and I both enjoy.
Lie to Me – Fascinating to think about what we give away through body language.
Flash Forward – So far, this is the only new show I’ve added to my schedule, and I love it. How much of their flashes are coming true because that’s what they think needs to happen? Very trippy, and very cool! (Firefly’s Gina Torres showed up last week. And eventually, Dominic Monaghan from LOST will come on in a big way. OOOOOO….)
So You Think You Can Dance – I love this show because it’s real dancers putting it all out there. Incredible talent on display.
Also, I can’t wait for the new version of V. I watched the original in the ’80s (will never forget Jane Bader swallowing that guinea pig!) The new version also gets points for using former LOST and Firefly cast members.
And I am anxiously awaiting the return of LOST and 24.

I watched 24 the first season it was on, but they lost me in the second season by having Jack make some decisions and actions early on in the season that were morally gray if not absolutely outright wrong/illegal. I don’t mind when heroes make mistakes, but they need to be mistakes, not conscious wrongdoing.
I’m going to have to get the discs of last season, though, because Peter Wingfield, the template for George in Stand-In Groom, was one of the bad guys.

Friday- Doctor Who airs on Friday’s on SyFy…I’m sooo excited for the new season!
Saturday- NCAA Football
Sunday-Steelers football and Masterpiece Classic

Is season 4 of Doctor Who just now starting to air on SyFy (or SciFi as I prefer, haha!!)? The new season with the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) is due to start on BBC America sometime in March or April ( I think).

The one with Donna as the companion? No its already aired. There are two specials that have aired on BBCA that I don’t think have aired on SyFy yet – The Other Doctor and Planet of the Dead. Both were good. The next one I heard was supposed to air in England sometime in late Oct/early Nov – so we will probably get it on BBCA sometime in January or February. And then the annual Christmas episode we will likely get in March or April. I’m hoping they did like last season and are only 3 weeks behind on BBCA this next year. Its absolutely dreadful waiting so long!

Huge Castle/Fillion fan. Castle is the only TV show I’m watching this fall. Though I’m looking forward to 30 Rock starting.

That’s my current fave Army Wives episode too! And not just because of the clothes and hair. But oh my, Catherine Bell was a KNOCKOUT in that one. Love this show so much.
Since I have no cable right now and have to watch my shows online I haven’t added anything new. I watch Monk, Psych, Criminal Minds and Army Wives. When I have cable again I’ll pick NCIS back up and give NCIS: LA a try just because Chris O’Donnell is in it and his partner is a former SEAL. Total sucker for that.
I’ve never been able to sit through a whole episode of The Mentalist. It just falls flat to me. Probably because I like Psych so much and Psych came first. The season opener this year got in a wonderful dig at The Mentalist that had me laughing for days.

Okay, there was TOTALLY a Firefly/Serenity reference in Castle last night. Did anyone else catch it?
It was near the beginning when Castle put the gloves on at the crime scene . . . “Two by two, hands of blue . . .”

I knew it was out there based on Nathan’s/”Rick’s” Tweets. I’m thinking I may download it from Audible (I have a couple of credits so I should be able to get it for under $10) before traveling at Christmas.

We have a couple of “likes” in common: Top Chef, Project Runway, Next Iron Chef. I am a huge fan of Mad Men, Masterpiece Anything, and Hell’s Kitchen, and anything (STILL) Law and Order. I watch Lost in reruns, because a waiting weekly for the plot to unfold is just too slow.
