Ask a Question–About MENU and RANSOME

Since I still have about 20,000 words to write this week, I’m going to try to get a head-start today by not spending several hours putting together the posts about food and costumes in Menu for Romance and Ransome’s Honor. Since it was so popular last time, I thought I’d open up today’s blog for y’all to post your questions about these two books. So ask me whatever you’d like about them—just remember, I reserve the right to remain silent. 🙂

What all does Boudreaux-Guidry Enterprises include? I know that Meredith’s parents started it as a real-estate business, but is that all it is? Could you expound on that and Meredith’s role in it? Also, does Major run his business out of one place and then go on location to all the places that need him?

What made you decide on 1814 as the setting for Ransomes Honor? Most Regencies I’ve read are usually earlier, like 1802 or 1803.

How did you come up with your character’s name’s? I’m just starting with writing fiction and I can never think of good names for my character’s. Also I heard your not supposed to have character’s with name’s that start with the same letter in a romance novel. But you have Meridith and Major. So is it ok to do that.

Has it been different to market an historical novel than a contemporary novel? Have you done anything differently to get the word out about Ransome’s Honor than you did with the contemporary novels?

I’m still waiting to get a copy of Menu for Romance. Can’t wait to receive it and delve in.

How did you get one series put out by Barbour and the other put out by Harvest House? Does your agent try to sell the books to a whole bunch of publishers and if any are interested you see which one will give you the most money? Some authors only seem to write for one publishing house, while others have books with several different houses.

It is unusual for an author, especially a new author, to not just be writing for two different publishing houses, but to also be writing in two different genres. But since Barbour decided to pass on the historical series (because it was too close in setting and tone to MaryLu Tyndall’s books, and they’d just signed her for an exclusive contract), my agent sent the historical series out to all of the other publishing houses. And Harvest bought it.

This next question is way off the subject, but I wasn’t sure where to ask it. I was looking up information for something else and ran across some pictures of this actor Kevin McKidd. I’ve never seen him in anything, but thought he would make a great hero. Why doesn’t anyone ever have red-headed heroes? Please make him be the hero of one of your books! 🙂

He looks like Daniel Craig’s little brother! I have a tendency to be drawn toward men with dark hair, so that’s why my heroes typically are dark-haired—because for me to be able to write a book in which the heroine falls in love with him, I have to be attracted to him myself. But if Barbour decides they like my next series proposal, one of the three heroes in that has strawberry blond hair.

You should get a message board. I don’t know where to post random suggestions like this. Here’s another hero type guy. Hmmm…he has a slight bone structure resemblance to George in Stand-In Groom. His name is Philip Winchester.
