Fun Friday–My TV Addictions
As most of you have already figured out, I’m a movie and TV junkie. But since I’ve been focusing so much on movies recently, I thought I’d turn my attention to TV this week. Several weeks ago, I got online and found a site that listed the premiere dates for all of my favorite returning shows as well as the new shows I want to give a shot this year. I’ll try to give you a Top-Ten Shows list at the end, but it’s easier for me to go day-by-day to share with you the shows I’m addicted to.
Mondays
HEROES. I didn’t watch the first season of this show until it came out on DVD, but it’s now one of my favorites.
C.S.I.-MIAMI. I know that lots of folks who love “regular” CSI hate this show, and it’s because of how absolutely annoying David Caruso is in the lead role of Horatio Cane. But that’s actually one of the reasons this is the only one of the CSI franchise that I watch–because Caruso’s cheese factor is hilarious to me.
Tuesdays
The Mentalist. This is a new show for the season, and so far, I’m really liking it!
Fringe. See my review of the pilot episode here.
Wednesdays
Pushing Daisies. I got hooked on this show last year, and was afraid that the writers’ strike would kill it. But they’ve brought it back and hopefully it’ll last a couple of seasons (after that, though, it might get a little long in the tooth).
America’s Next Top Model. I tried to explain why in this post.
Project Runway. Don’t ask me why. I just do. But this season ends in two weeks and will be followed by my MORE favorite reality show TOP CHEF.
Thursdays
LOST. Returns for Season 5 in January 2009. (And fellow Losties, be sure to hop over to the ABC site linked–they have several behind-the-scenes clips up!)
Eleventh Hour. This show premieres next Thursday (10/9), so it’s as-yet unproven. But it stars Rufus Sewell, a wonderful British actor (A Knight’s Tale, Tristan + Isolde, Amazing Grace, The Illusionist, The Holiday)—and it has an interesting concept.
Fridays
Numb3rs. I started watching this show in its second season and was immediately hooked. Love Joel Fleischman–I mean Rob Morrow 🙂 and David Krumholtz as brothers who solve crimes together—one’s an FBI agent and the other a genius mathematician. The supporting cast is great as well.
Crusoe. (Premieres Friday, October 17) You may have seen this one advertised during the Olympics. I’m going to give it a try to see how it translates to the small screen. And it features Sean Bean (Boromir from LOTR) as Robinson Crusoe’s father.
Saturdays
Primeval (BBC America). This is currently the BEST show on TV. I don’t know that I would call it my overall favorite (that has to go to LOST)—but yes, I’m putting it above even Heroes. It’s a cross between Stargate and Jurassic Park—with British and Scottish accents. With each episode, it just gets better and better!
LSU FOOTBALL!!!!!–Of course! Gotta watch my boys play ball.
Sundays
Extreme Makeover Home Edition–Doesn’t everyone?
The Amazing Race. I’ve been hooked on this show for a very, very long time. I think the eleventh (?) cycle–the ones with families–was the only one I didn’t watch all the way through.
Law & Order: Criminal Intent (returning in November for a new “season” on USA Network). This is the only edition of this franchise that I watch—and it’s all about Vincent d’Onofrio for me. I was somewhat disappointed when he went “part-time”—doing only about half of a season’s episodes, with Chris Noth taking over the lead in Vincent’s off weeks. But now Chris Noth is gone (yay!) and is being replaced by (are you ready for this?) JEFF GOLDBLUM! I can’t wait for the new episodes to start!
Army Wives. This is my soap opera. It’s a well-written, superbly acted show.

Wow, you watch a ridiculous amount of television.
I watch Fringe and Lost. Fringe is steadily growing on me, and Lost is possibly the greatest show of all time. Everything else I watch is on DVD.
I caught the first season of Heroes on TV and thought it was really good, but when the second season came back, I was so bored with it that I quit watching.

Tuesdays: The Mentalist and House (when I remember to manually set the DVR to record, since the scheduling feature doesn’t like the show)
Wednesdays: Pushing Daisies & Bones
Thursdays: Ugly Betty, will watch Eleventh Hour
Fridays: Life, will watch Crusoe
Saturdays: Primeval, completely agree with you about that show!
Will also watch 24, whenever it returns. *sigh* 😉

Reality TV is a big turn off. When will it go away?
I plan to watch Crusoe on Fridays. Lost when it airs again, as long as it’s still on Thursdays.
Otherwise it’s DVDs of Stargate Atlantis/SG-1 and The Dog Whisperer while I ride the stationary bike.
Kaye, I’d never heard of Primeval. I watched the clip. It looks like the type of show where the scary creature kills off characters one by one. Is it?

Lori – remarkably few people have died in Primeval, all things considered. And the deaths that do occur aren’t explicit.

I’m single and I don’t have much of a social life. So I watch TV. Actually a lot of the shows, like CSI Miami and Extreme Makeover and the “reality” shows are some that I will watch when I think about it, but if I miss them, I don’t feel too bad about it. Then there’s the fact that I DVR most of the shows that I am truly “addicted” to and watch them later when I can fast-forward through the commercials to save time.

I’m really not a whole lot better. I just watch DVD’s constantly these days. I loathe commercials and hate TV by default of that.
I wasn’t judging. Just read my blog. I spend just as much time in front of TV screen.

I didn’t want to cast aspersions, but figured you probably have about as much “screen time” as I do. My thing is that I’ve been watching more commercial TV since I got my DVR back in the spring than DVDs. I even cut my Netflix subscription down to two-at-a-time instead of three because I wasn’t watching them quickly enough to justify the expense.
Of course, now that I’ve gotten addicted to Battlestar Galactica, I’m kind of wishing I still had my three-at-a-time subscription. But I can usually get a three-day turnaround on discs through Netflix, so it’s not like I’m having to wait that long. I just mailed two discs back yesterday and will get the next two tomorrow.

Kaye, there must be a generational gap LOL! since I only watch one of your shows–Numbers. I agree with you that it is very well written and fun to watch. I love the math explanations! My 25 year old daughter loves Army Wives, tho!

Ruth, got them saved in my queue. November was looking a little bleak for rentals, so I hope it clicks with us.
Lost Season 4 is released Dec. 9th, and I want to watch it again before Season 5 starts airing sometime in Jan. I’ve never been able to watch them on line at ABC. They get about 15 or 20 minutes in, and freeze up. Podcasts will sometimes do that on my computer too.

Lori, I hope you enjoy the show. I really started to get into it around episode 3…the first 2 eps were a bit of a slow go for me. Then the show really took off.

Actually, Lori – there haven’t been any deaths so far of main characters – its all been people in just one episode – and like Ruth said they aren’t gruesome at all. The ick factor is very much like, as Kaye said, Men in Black – more goop and some blood.
I’m actually watching yesterday’s episode right now 🙂

Blood is fine. I was more concerned about the “jump” factor, because the clip made it seem like the dinosaurs leap out at people and eat them, or scare them, and are jumping in the camera’s “face” a lot, which induces the startled “jump” reaction in the viewer. Once every now and then is fine, but continuously, not so much. Maybe that’s just the way the clip was edited, though. Like I said, I’m willing to give it a try.

To give you an idea of what I loathe in this regard: Peter Jackson’s King Kong. Absolute drek as far as goop, and nasty creatures inflicting gruesome deaths on people. I had to bail on that film.
Oh, and that second Indiana Jones movie. Temple of Doom. Hate it!

I didn’t like Peter Jackson’s King Kong either. Don’t mind the 2nd Indy movie, but it’s my least favorite of the 4 films.

There. It’s broken. I hope you ladies are happy.
The first hour of King Kong is unbelievably slow, but the last two hours are incredible. That dinosaur battle is one of the greatest action scenes in the history of cinema. R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Just because it’s not as good as LotR doesn’t mean it’s not a good movie on it’s own. It wasn’t THAT big of a quality (I mean, we’re not talking a Finding Nemo to Cars kind of quality drop).

Love Army Wives. Love Fringe, hope that show sticks around. My other favorites are Cold Case NCIS and Bones…oh yeah and Sarah Connor Chronicles…and I have to say I’m a Gossip Girl fan…but that started by accident because of some research I was doing…long story.
