Fun Friday—Some Favorite Movie Quotes

fun-friday.jpg

Some movie quotes are destined to be remembered forever:
“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
“I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.”
“Go ahead. Make my day.”
“I’ll be bahk.”
“Bond. James Bond.”

So, in celebration of this being my 450th blog post, I decided to compose a list of some of my favorite movie quotes—those that kind of go beyond the most familiar lines we hear quoted so often (although there may be a few that are “often quoted” lines that I just can’t resist including). Some of them may be familiar to you, some may not. Please be sure to leave a comment with your favorite, if I don’t list it!

*

“Good shot, Red Two!” (Denis Lawson as Wedge Antilles, Return of the Jedi)

*

“We always knew you were a whoopsie.” (Terry Murphy as Old Pirate, Stardust)

*

“This is football. All people care about are touchdowns and injuries. They don’t give a damn about that grape sh*t.” (Shirley MacLaine as Ouiser Boudreaux, Steel Magnolias*)
*I may do a separate post another time with my favorite quotes from this, the most quotable movie EVER, at another date.

*

“Have you ever fallen in love with someone you haven’t even talked to? Have you ever been so alone you spend the night confusing a man in a coma?” (Sandra Bullock as Lucy Moderatz, While You Were Sleeping)

*

“I have a bad feeling about this.” (Various characters, all six movies in the the Star Wars saga)

*

“You’ll shoot your eye out!” (Various characters, A Christmas Story)

*

“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” (Mandy Patinkin as Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride)

*

“I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair.
I hate the way you drive my car. I hate it when you stare.
I hate your big dumb combat boots, and the way you read my mind.
I hate you so much it makes me sick; it even makes me rhyme.
I hate the way you’re always right. I hate it when you lie.
I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry.
I hate it when you’re not around, and the fact that you didn’t call.
But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you.
Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.”
(Julia Stiles as Kat Stratford, 10 Things I Hate About You)

*

“I’ll have what she’s having.” (Estelle Reiner as Female Diner, When Harry Met Sally)

*

“When a man is wrestling a leopard in the middle of a pond, he’s in no position to run.” (Cary Grant as David Huxley, Bringing Up Baby)

*

“I see dead people.” (Haley Joel Osment as Cole Sear, The Sixth Sense)

*

“Elizabeth and I were married by the time we were twenty, and we’d been going out since we were fifteen so this may sound a bit juvenile but . . . can I hold your hand?” (David Duchovny as Bob Rueland, Return to Me)

*

“There’s no crying! There’s no crying in baseball!” (Tom Hanks as Jimmy Dugan, A League of Their Own)

*

“What is discretion but dishonesty dressed up in a little good breeding?” (Kevin Kline as Cole Porter, De-Lovely)

*

Wash: This landing is gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define “interesting.”
Wash: “Oh God, oh God, we’re all going to die”?
(Alan Tudyk as Hoban “Wash” Washburn and Nathan Fillion as Malcolm Reynolds, Serenity)

*

“Face it, girls, I’m older and I have more insurance.” (Kathy Bates as Evelyn Couch, Fried Green Tomatoes)

*

“I’m a writer. . . A writer. I write, with parchment, and ink. Geoffrey Chaucer’s the name, writing’s the game. You’ve read my book? the Book of the Duchess? No? Well, it was allegorical . . . I give the truth scope! . . . I will eviscerate you in fiction. Every pimple, every character flaw. I was naked for a day; you will be naked for eternity.” (Paul Bettany as Geoffrey Chaucer, A Knight’s Tale)

*

“England is under threat of invasion, and though we be on the far side of the world, this ship is our home. This ship is England. So it’s every hand to his rope or gun, quick’s the word and sharp’s the action. After all . . . Surprise is on our side.” (Russell Crowe as Captain Jack Aubrey, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World)

*

“I’m going crazy. I’m standing here solidly on my own two hands and going crazy.” (Katharine Hepburn as Tracy Lord, The Philadelphia Story)

*

“There’s a monster outside my room, can I have a glass of water?” (Abigail Breslin as Bo Hess, Signs)

*

“Well, it was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we were supposed to be together. . . and I knew it. I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home . . . only to no home I’d ever known. I was just taking her hand to help her out of a car and I knew. It was like . . . magic.” (Tom Hanks as Sam Baldwin, Sleepless in Seattle)

*

“Whatever else anything is, it ought to begin by being personal.” (Meg Ryan as Kathleen Kelly, You’ve Got Mail)

*

“Yeah, well, I married a first date, missy, and you know how it is. You’re out with a guy, you find him attractive, and suddenly everything he says sounds brilliant. Hairy legs are your only link to reality. . . . It kept me a virgin until, y’know, whenever.” (Bonnie Hunt as Megan Dayton, Return to Me)

Love the quote from “Master and Commander”. I’m a huge Russell Crowe fan!

    Here’s one of my favorites:

“I think of a man. Then I take away reason and accountability.” (Jack Nicholson as Melvin in “As Good As It Gets”)

From Pride and Prejudice, best story EVER:

“You are too generous to trifle with me….” and all the rest that comes after, second only to “In vain have I struggled, it will not do…”, quoted above.

    From Enchanted:

    “I knew it was you.”

    From 27 Dresses:

“You deserve it. I believe that, I do. You deserve to have someone take care of you for once.”

When a man says a woman “deserves” something good, I melt into goo. 🙂

Those last two are fresh in my mind, because that’s what I’ve watched recently.

IMO, you can pull just about any line between Harry and Sally out and have a great quote, beginning with “Men and women can’t be friends.” I also love the one, “He didn’t want to marry ME. What’s wrong with ME?!?”

    From Amazing Grace:

“God sometimes does His work with gentle drizzle, not storms. Drip. Drip. Drip.”

“Although my memory’s fading, I remember two things very clearly. I am a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior.”

I never remember enough from movies to pull a quote out of the air. Next time I’ll take notes 🙂

One of my favorite lines–shallow though it may be–is from the movie, Dante’s Peak:

“Coffee! CoffeecoffeecoffeecoffeeCOFFEE! Java! Cappa-cheeee-no! Coffee! Yeah!”

I used to write stories with quotes from Ever After, casting my friends and sometimes the movie characters in ridiculous situations. Only rule was that all (or nearly all) the dialogue had to be direct quotes from Ever After. Ten years later we still break out in quotes, on occasion (aloe helps to soothe it, though). 🙂

“A bird may love a fish, but where would they live?”

“Then I will have to make you wings.”

Excellent selection. I think you should write an article about Firefly. I’m sure it has something to teach. I’ll, um, leave it up to you to find out what it is.

    Fun!

From The Mummy: “This just keeps getting better and better.”

From Men in Black: “You better ease up off me ‘fore somthin’ bad happen to ya.”

Also from Men in Black: “Elvis is not dead. He just went home.”

Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country: “Once again we saved the universe as we know it.”

One of the Star Trek movies with TNG cast-Captain Picard asks Data how long he thought about joining the Borg. Data responds: “6.8 nanoseconds. To an android, that’s an eternity.”

    From The Mummy–
    Evie: Patience is a virtue.
Rick: Not right now it isn’t!

    Thoroughly Modern Millie: Oh pook!

Galaxy Quest: Never give up. Never surrender!

Young Frankenstein: Without the nervous system we would all collapse like a bunch of broccoli!

Bo from Signs: It’s got his amoebas in it.

Parlor, Bed and Bath: My darling. I love you madly. I cannot live without you. You must never leave me!

A Philadelphia Story: C.K. Dexter Haven. Oh C.K. Dexter Haaaaaaaaaveeen!

Firefly: I can kill you with my brain. (River)

Firefly: Curse you and your sudden but inevitable betrayal. (One of Wash’s plastic dinosaurs)

Now to regale you with a few from the best sci-fi show ever, Farscape. Spoken by Crichton unless stated otherwise.

Lock up the women and hide the fried chicken!

Cross my heart, smack me dead, stick a lobster on my head.

    I’ve got great eyes, they’re 20/20 and they’re BLUE!

    Crichton: You’re very wise.
Pilot: I don’t get out much, so I read.

Harvey: Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to pay our final respects and to say farewell to our dear friend, Commander John Crichton. A schmuck! Mule headed, reckless, and probably brain dead before I met him. Alas…his death is mine also.

Rygel: I never run away. I strategically maneuver.

I could keep going but I’ll stop now.

    Rachel,

Loved Firefly. Mostly loved Farscape, too (except when I didn’t). But when it comes to SciFi I’m first a Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis fan.

    “Indeed.”

Unless… does LOST count as SciFi?

Favorite LOST quotes: nearly anything Sawyer says. Even on the commentaries Josh Holloway has some great lines.

“Great plan, Moonbeam. And after that we can sing Kum-ba-ya and do ‘trust falls.’ ”

“A doctor playing golf….well now I’ve heard everything. What’s next? A cop eating a donut?”

    “I’m a complex guy, sweetheart!”

“Kids are like dogs. You knock ’em around enough, they start thinkin’ they did something to deserve it.”

“Great… we can all sue Oceanic together.”

Ok. I could go on… an on. 🙂

I thought of another one I’m very fond of. From Robin Hood: Men In Tights.

“Unlike all the other Robin Hoods, I speak with a British accent.”
