Our Guilty-Pleasure Foods

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Thanksgiving is a holiday that has become synonymous with food. The turkey. The dressing. The green bean and sweet potato casseroles. The cranberry sauce (whether whole or canned). And the desserts! (In my family, this year it was salad, steak, baked potato, and peach dump cake because it’s just three of us and we’re not big fans of turkey anyway.)

But Thanksgiving kicks off the the holiday season, and as we all know, that means Season’s Eatings. Then, I saw this article on The A.V. Club’s website: “The worst foods we love.” This, combined with the news about Hostess (possibly) going out of business and taking away our (name-brand instead of Little Debbie or store-brand knockoff versions of) Twinkies, Ding Dongs, and Ho-Hos, has brought junk food to the top of my mind.

With Hostess products no longer on the shelf, Little Debbie is
already starting to take over the snack-cake world! Mwahahaha!

(Okay, it’s not like it really takes much more than getting out of bed for junk food to be top of mind for me. Sometimes it doesn’t even take getting out of bed before I’m thinking about unhealthy foodstuffs.)

I identified with MOST of the “worst foods” listed in the A.V. Club article.

If I had to pick my top three “worst foods” (and this is really hard to narrow down), they’d be:
.

      1. McDonald’s Big Mac Extra Value meal (size Medium) with Dr. Pepper to drink.

      2. Top Ramen (beef flavored, with added red pepper flakes for heat)

      3. Starbucks Mocha Java ice cream (when they have it at Kroger, which isn’t all the time, thank goodness!)

.

What are your top three “worst foods”/junk-food addictions?

every christmas we get candy cane ice cream at our grocery stores: it has candy cane pieces and red and green stripes and peppermint and fudge crackle. it is in my freezer right now.

my three big bad food groups?:

    1.) popcorn (microwave)
2.) ice cream or frozen yogourt ( see above )
    3.)jelly bellys

Ooh, I forgot Snow Cream. Even more than the Starbucks ice cream, Snow Cream is a MUST-buy for me if/when I see it at the store. It’s made by one or two regional manufacturers (so I don’t know if it shows up anywhere else) and it’s made to taste like when you make real snow-cream with snow and sweetened condensed milk (similar but much smoother texture, too). And it’s usually only produced during the holidays.

Chef Boyardee ravioli, Coke and the third spot is a tie between popcorn and Chinese takeout. I don’t eat a lot of ice cream because it tends to upset my tummy.

I also love love LOVE Wendy’s new “Natural Cut Fries with Sea Salt”. Everything a fast food fry should be. And I miss Ding Dongs already. Little Debbie’s are okay, but can’t compare to the real thing.

I used to love Wendy’s fries before they revamped them. Not too fond of them now. They’re too dry, not crisp enough, and not salty enough (and I’ve tried them at several locations in different cities/states).

McDonald’s fries are my favorites. Those, and the “cheese fries” they have as appetizers at most steahouses (Logan’s, Texas Roadhouse, Longhorn, etc.)—you know, the huge pile of steakfries heaped with tons of melted cheese and bacon and usually with ranch (or, better yet, spicy ranch) dressing for dipping. Urg . . . now I’m craving those!

I’ve never been a fan of McD’s fries. I almost hate them. I’ve never in my life had McD’s fries that match the salty descriptions I hear from so many people. The ones here taste worse than cardboard, are limp and soggy and have no salt.

The Wendy’s closest to our house has the best fries in the area. They’re always perfect and oh-so-salty. Before the new ones came out, Wendy’s fries were okay to me. They never had enough salt on them around here. Now they do.

Rachel I use to like the fries in Australia at macca’s they use a different oil and are not as fatty. Recently I went completely off there food so much so that in the city last week I didn’t eat one meal there when I use to live there when away. I actually dont eat chips/fries much at all now.

I’m lucky that I am not really a fan of most junk food. I would rather eat… almost anything than a twinkie, ring-ding, ding-dong, or whatever else those icky nasty cream filled cakey things are called.

I do, unfortunately like chips, especially the fake-chemical-cheese-flavored type, and cheez-its and goldfish, but I never buy them, so I really only eat them at other people’s parties and so on – not very often.

I also have a weakness for jelly bellies, like someone else mentioned. Every time (usually only once a year or so) I visit my best friend who lives outside Boston we go trapezing and there is a jelly-belly store right there… we always buy some and I always eat too many. I actually have a bit of a weak spot for all gummy candies, and other candy bars and things but again I get around it buy rarely buying them :o)

Other than that…. I gave up most grains and breads a few years ago but I am still tempted by bagels occasionally. Mmmmm… a nice toasted bagel with lox cream cheese and I’m in heaven. Haven’t had that in a LONG time :o(

One of the things I can’t pass up around Eastertime are the Starburst “Reds” jelly beans.

I’m with Audrey. My husband and I don’t by chips and crackers because we devour them. I love the cheesy one, yuuummm Cheetos, Chris prefers anything bbq. But we can tear through plain just as easy. HAHA, but like I said we know this therefore we rarely or never have them in the house.

All of it. I usually don’t go for salty (though McD’s fries *are* the best), but anything sweet (even more if it’s creamy, too). I would eat everything in that picture above, though I’d hit the Nutty Bars first. Yum. Junk food like this doesn’t last in our house, so I have to not bring it in in the first place. I have no problem with cookies for breakfast. Favorite dessert, hands down, is Olive Garden Tiramisu.

Thanks for the beef ramen idea. My husband loves beef (as opposed to chicken) and red pepper flakes. Never thought to put them together.

I put the red pepper flakes in as soon as I put the water on to boil so that they’re edibly soft when the whole thing is finished.
