TV Show Discussion Reminder—Feel free to discuss season finales/spoilers. Those who haven’t seen them yet will either read it and have the surprises spoiled, or skip it and be surprised when we do get around to watching it.

    Hawaii Five-0 Season Finale
Maybe I’m still a just a tad obsessed with Alex O’Loughlin (for those of you who don’t know who AO’L is, he’s the Aussie actor who’s the template for Jamie who also happens to play Steve McGarrett in H50), but I thought he was at his best EVER in the finale. Can’t wait until next fall!

Having watched the original series ever since I was a kid, I find it so interesting that despite the differences with the new and old series, I accept and enjoy the new series almost as a separate entity. I see Alex is McGarrett, Scott is Danno, Daniel is Chin, even Grace is Kono … it’s hard to explain. I’ll say one thing about the finale … they definitely left us hanging!

Of course, I always like seeing if I recognize anyplace or anything … and then talking to my friends about it (jokingly giving the writers and directors some flack for having Chin call rubber zories/rubber slippahs “flip flops” …) =P

I just have a hard time accepting the Chairman playing Wo Fat. I keep waiting for him to yell “Allez Cuisine!”

      • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 11:04 am

I caught a few minutes of Iron Chef America last night and I started yelling at The Chairman for tasing Steve! :-)

        • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 12:32 pm

THAT could be an interesting cross-over show! :D

    • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 6:14 pm

We are still several weeks away from the final but am loving the series as I remember places I visited. Did you know that Dano’s wife is also an aussie?

Now to celebrate, Kaye, you must watch Castle from where you left off all the way to the finale. You must!

    • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 12:07 am

      Don’t worry–I plan to!

    • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 10:50 am

Yes, Kaye, you MUST. This finale actually has the power to make me wish it were already September. Oh. My. Goodness.

      • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 5:00 pm

Oh my word, Castle actually made me gasp. That almost never happens when I watch TV or movies.

Two new fairytale themed shows in the fall.
NBC and ABC have both announced this week that they’ve picked up new shows with fairytale themes:
    First, there’s Grimm from NBC:

Then, there’s Once Upon a Time from ABC:

    Thoughts?

    • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 12:37 am

      That’s a novel idea!

Interesting … Grimm kind of creeps me out –but I never liked suspense too much. It kind of sounds like a mix with crime drama (’cause he’s a police officer?) & fantasy.

I might check out Once Upon a Time –and was it just me, or was that Robert Carlyle in the trailer? It looks like him …

Speaking of t.v. finales, I must say that I’m really upset that Stargate: Universe was cancelled. The finale made me wish there will be more … Admittedly, I didn’t (and still don’t) care for certain aspects of “SGU” but it’s slowly been growing on me during this second season. I’m disappointed that it won’t be returning … just had to get that off my chest. =)

        • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 6:33 am

          Yep, that’s Robert Carlyle.

    • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 5:49 am

I’m so excited about Once Upon a Time! Mixing fairy tale and real life…sweet!

    • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 6:33 am

I plan on trying both shows, but Grimm may go too *dark* for me. Once Upon a Time looks like a blast though!

I feel the same way … but they say that Grimm’s Fairy Tales weren’t really kids stories anyway –I’m too used to the Disney versions, I guess.

Watching the trailers again, it seems like these types of shows seem like something Sci-Fi would have picked up (today, “SyFy” is kind of … loosing it, programming-wise, but I won’t get into that). I wonder if these shows will make it on a main broadcast network? I mean, NBC dropped “Merlin” after running the first season (I don’t think they marketed it that much though and I think it was a summer filler?) …

I’m curious — what do you think inspired them to do these shows? There was a whole gamut of shows trying to copy “Lost” after they became popular. What do you think was the prompt for these shows?

    • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 11:04 am

As someone who loved Buffy (hey, better late than never), I would probably love Grimm. I know my daughters will. My husband will hate it, though. I’m just sayin’. He can’t stand shows that have things jumping out at you for some reason! lol Once Upon a Time looks a little confusing – but then it is from the creators of LOST!

New Lone Ranger Movie in the Works
I’d heard that Johnny Depp was attached to a Lone Ranger project before I heard there would be a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Yesterday, they announced the casting of the actor who will play the titular role of the Lone Ranger (if he was so “lone,” why was Tonto there?):
    http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/05/17/lone-ranger-armie-hammer-johnny-depp/

As I said when I posted this on FB last night, I’m not sure what I think of this casting. There’s no way this kid will ever be able to shine through as the Lone Ranger against Johnny Depp as Tonto. His major claim to fame is that he was in The Social Network. Which I never saw. Which means I’ve never heard of him before this. The Lone Ranger should be someone with name recognition—despite the fact Johnny Depp is in the movie. It’s friggin’ called THE LONE RANGER. Not Tonto and His Cowboy Sidekick!

    • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 6:38 am

The lack of name recognition doesn’t bother me, because with Depp attached to the project it’s going to be very high profile…and it’ll bust this guy’s career wide open. Might be interesting!

Game of Thrones—anyone here watching it?
I know it’s over the top with violence and sensuality, but I’m still really interested in seeing it. I may try to read at least the first book in the series (A Song of Ice and Fire) between now and the time it’s available on DVD/streaming online.

I heard that Jason Momoa was in it (enjoyed him in Stargate: Atlantis) but other than that … because of some of the content, I don’t know if the storyline is enough to keep me interested.

    • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 6:37 am

I wish there was a show like that without all the “junk,” because I love fantasy…but this will be a pass for me.

    Castle . . . Chuck . . . South Riding . . . Anything else you want to discuss?

    • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 12:38 am

House? Lisa Eddleston is not returning next year. Hmmmmmmmmm.

      • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 12:40 am

I stopped watching House years ago when the storylines kept getting more and more outlandish and House’s behavior kept being excused. No matter how much I love Hugh Laurie, that’s one show that got really old really fast for me.

Cuddy’s leaving? Wow … I haven’t kept up with House for a while though … I liked Chase and Cameron (LOL, shows how long ago I watched).

      • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 9:56 pm

Just saw Chuck on DVR. Very cool ending. Glad they didn’t do the cliffhanger I was afraid was coming. (See, Kaye? They’re like you. They surprise me. LOL) Thought the Morgan twist was awesome! And I’m with Regina… you just know his dad is around somewhere. Loved the foreshadowing of that!

    • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 6:36 am

Castle was freaking AMAZING. Chuck – so much fun, and I think they’ve set themselves up for a very strong final season. South Riding – I am still working on my last post – just haven’t had time to finish it this week!

      • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 10:01 am

Castle just keeps elevating it’s game.

        • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 10:54 am

You are so right. Castle has been on fire this season, it’s been quite fun to watch the show continue to exceed my expectations. Looking forward to its return!

        • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 11:06 am

So many theories about that ending. Since we know it’s been picked up for another season, the possibilities are endless. I think I have an idea, but it’ll be SEPTEMBER before I know for sure!!!! Ugh!

Chuck had a strong ending, too. Not sure how that’ll play, them being free-lance spies without benefit of the CIA behind them. Morgan as the Intersect? LOL And where is Chuck’s dad? I’ve been waiting to see a glimpse of him all season!!

Final season of Law & Order: Criminal Intent
This was the only one of the L&O franchise I ever watched—and I watched it because of Vincent d’Onofrio as Bobby Goren (there’s a reason why I named my law enforcement hero Bobby!). So when Vd’O left the show at the beginning of the previous season, I stopped watching. Because no matter how much I like Jeff Goldblum, the show didn’t mean anything without Vd’O/Goren.

So I was thrilled when I learned that Vd’O and Kathryn Erbe were coming back for the final season of the show. I’ve seen two of the three new episodes so far, and they’ve been spectacular. d’Onofrio has been stunning as the troubled Goren this season—he’s Bobby at his absolute best, in the investigation and interrogation scenes, and Bobby at his most vulnerable in the scenes with the therapist he’s required to see to be able to stay on active duty. If he doesn’t get an Emmy for his performance this season, there’s something wrong with those awards people!

    Anyone else watching?

  9. Wednesday, May 18, 2011 5:50 am

Castle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh. My. Goodness. Awesome finale!!!!!!

    • Wednesday, May 18, 2011 11:56 am

I know, right? Between that, the NCIS finale last night (which, by the way leaves you with a BIG question!!), and the BONES finale coming up tomorrow, I don’t know how I’ll last the summer!!!

  10. Wednesday, May 18, 2011 4:42 pm

Haven’t popped into an Open Mic Wednesday in a while so I thought I’d see what’s doing over here. Can’t add much since I pretty much don’t watch any of the shows mentioned.

I did find out today, though, that Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, the spinoff, was cancelled. Liked it. Started slow but was getting better with each episode. Some cast changes might have been warranted to increase chemistry but the stories were good. Oh, well. Still have the original.

  11. Thursday, May 19, 2011 10:13 pm

I was very pleased with the way Criminal Minds ended for the season. And Big Bang tonight made me wish it’s September already!
