Open Mic Wednesday–Administrative Professionals Day Edition

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Happy Administrative Professionals Day!

As I mentioned on Monday, I worked as an administrative/executive assistant from 1994 through 2006 in the newspaper advertising industry. So this is a “holiday” that is near and dear to my heart.

I’ll be speaking at an Administrative Professionals Day breakfast at Cedar Springs Christian Store in Knoxville this morning, so I won’t be online to join in the discussion until later this afternoon.

Do you know a secretary/administrative assistant/executive assistant/office manager? Are you one? Give a shout-out to your favorite administrative professional today!

Now . . . what else do you want to talk about?

Our church financial secretary/office manager is retiring this month. I’m happy for her, but SO torn. She’s been the constant in that office for 35 years, knows how everything “works,” and has at Godly spirit, to boot! I’ll miss her in that capacity. I’m just glad she’s also a dedicated member of our church!

And what ELSE do I want to talk about? :D

I have to wonder if Sun and Jin will live long enough to “always be together.” WILL they bring back Mr. Eko? Surely there is SOME chink in Flocke’s armor that will allow him to be killed! What about Desmond? SURELY if Sayid had actually KILLED him, we’d have seen that?! As I said on twitter, when Jack has his “aha” moment, will he cry? And will Locke be the catalyst for that?

And what about that young man playing Jack’s son? Did they pick well, or what?

As I commented back on Twitter–if Sayid had actually shot Desmond, they would have shown it. Des is out there being all metaphysical and electromagnetic and will be the solution to everything yet.

Someone responded to me on Twitter last night that the actor who played Mr. Eko left the show on bad terms, so it may be unlikely that he’d return.

OF COURSE Jack’s going to cry. That’s why they hired Matthew Fox—because of his ability to cry on command. I want to know who the mother of his child is.

Loved, loved, loved that Sawyer used the garden hose to take Sayid down. And the parallels in this episode to previous episodes: Jack jumping off the boat (paralleling Sawyer jumping off the helicopter) and Jack about to do surgery on John willingly (vs. Jack doing surgery on Ben unwillingly). Will this near-death experience for John make him remember what happened in the island timeline? It seemed pretty obvious that Sun’s getting shot made her memories start breaking through, because she obviously recognized Locke when they were getting wheeled into the hospital.

It’s going to take Jack and Kate coming face to face for either of them to remember—I think that’ll be the key to Kate deciding between Jack and Sawyer (plus, I’m still holding out hope they’ll bring Juliet back for the finale). And I want to see non-crazy-Claire and Charlie end up together, somehow.

I loved Jack’s reasoning about why they shouldn’t leave the island—because Flocke is too eager to help them leave, so why’s he trying to get them off the island so desperately?

And we’d all figured it out already, but it was nice to have confirmation last night in so many words that Smokey/MIB was the one masquerading as Christian Shephard.

Have I forgotten something from a previous episode? Why wasn’t Miles with Sawyer & Crew when they made a run for it on the sailboat? Where’s Miles?

Good recap! Sad about Eko possibly not coming back. Loved him! And I totally kept saying, “where’s Miles?” I couldn’t remember where he was last. Maybe I’ll have to go back through the last couple of episodes to find out, but can’t see them forgetting about him. He has to be gone for a reason.

Okay, just went to Lostpedia and read the recap of the previous episode–forgot Miles went with Richard and Ben after Hurley blew up the Black Rock.

When Sawyer tripped Sayid with the garden hose, my husband said, “This guy is going to get more work after this show. Can’t imagine him NOT getting more work.”

        We’re both Sawyer/James/Josh fans now. :)

Last night’s ep restored my faltering faith in this last season. I don’t like dark side Sayid, or nutter Claire. I want that fixed! Pretty please.

Oh, and congratulations on that talk. I’m not in admin and don’t think I’m well suited for that, but sounds like it was a great talk and your listeners were blessed. You too!

Ditto about Juliet. Do you think she’s the mother of Jack’s son? I’m expecting wherever she is there will be a scene in which she asks James out for coffee. Maybe that will be the very end, in the finale. They have to bring her back.

Ooooooo . . . that WOULD be good! Oh and the garden hose was PRICELESS! LOL Leave it to James . . .

And then there’s Charlotte and Daniel floating around out there . . . I think they’re important to the whole thing, too, somehow.

But I agree with Kaye – Desmond HAS to be the key.

      Regina,

**I have to wonder if Sun and Jin will live long enough to “always be together.”**

As soon as Jin said that, I said, “Nooooo, don’t promise that, now you are doomed!” Unless, of course, they will be dead together. I don’t want that to happen. I don’t want another character to die. Enough already for crying out loud.

Until last night I was really losing faith in the writers, because I just don’t get this “gone to the dark side” Sayid or “gone nutters” Claire. What is the point? Not sure. Holding out hope…..

      Jack’s son… perfect casting.

Feeling better about things because Sayid did not shoot Des, and alternate John did not die and I’m thinking Jack is going to make him walk again.

And I really like alternate Ben.

Loved all the character connections in last night’s ep.

I felt relieved about Sayid, too. There was almost a sparkle in his eye when we KNEW he was lying about Desmond. But Claire . . . I don’t know.

I’m one! I’m the one person office administrator at our local Literacy Volunteers organization. It’s great to work here for such a worthy cause – adult literacy. There’s a ton of work for me to do to keep things running. I’m also a tutor and tutor trainer.

    How’d your talk go?

    • Wednesday, April 21, 2010 1:06 pm

The talk went very well. There were about 90 ladies (church secretaries) there. I talked about three concepts I learned working as an admin back in the day (developing a can-do attitude, setting priorities, and having a servant’s heart) and how that’s helped me in my career as a writer but also in life. Afterward, I had so many of them come up to me and tell me that they loved it—got so much more out of it than in previous years when the speakers all gave, “rah-rah, you’re so appreciated” type speeches.

And I made really good connections with the owners/employees of the store. Will probably try to set up some other events there again!

Sounds like it was great, and what a LOT of folks in the workplace (me, included) need to hear!

      • Wednesday, April 21, 2010 6:04 pm

That’s great, Kaye! It sounds like you made it relevant and that’s wonderful about new connections!

When we lived in East TN we frequented Cedar Springs. Always liked that store.
My Mom was in the clerical/admin asst field for as long as I can remember. She did everything from bookkeeping for a small insurance company to being the administrator of a day care for DOD when we were in Augsburg, (West) Germany. It wasn’t her chosen career-not sure what that would have been as Mom is very pragmatic. But I know she did it so my sister and I could have things she never had as a child. I’m so happy for her that for the past 18 years my folks have been in a position so that she has not had to work outside the home. They have been able to travel and enjoy some of the finer things they’ve always wanted.

Carol, when were your parents in Augsburg? We were there (Kaye’s parents) before she came along, so quite a long time ago. Love the city, outdoor operas for the average person, shopping, access to so many other places.
