Open Mic Wednesday 3/24/10

It’s Open Mic Wednesday. What do you want to talk about today?

A couple of suggestions . . .

(But be sure to indicate if you’re posting spoilers for anyone who might not be completely caught up with them!)
For those of you who don’t watch/aren’t interested in discussing these TV shows—here’s a topic: What’s the last concert you went to? The last two I’ve been to were Michael Bublé and Weird Al Yankovic.

No spoilers here…I’m just confessing to my recent Castle addiction. Anybody else? The dialogue is fun and sassy. The lead character is cute, and the daughter is refreshingly normal. (Wish she were available for my son!) I need a weekly escape. Combining the writing element with crime and drama sends me to my happy place (at least for an hour).
The reason I started watching Castle: Nathan Fillion. Loved him in Firefly/Serenity, and when I saw him in the previews for this show (exhibiting what seems to be his own personal sense of humor that he brings to every role I’ve ever seen him in), I knew I had to watch at least a few episodes, just for him.
Why I kept watching Castle: the writing. So far, it’s been one of the least-predictable cop shows on TV (my favorite still being Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The interplay between Castle and Beckett is priceless—and even the supporting players are superb. And when they need to take things seriously, they do. They’ve got a great balance of humor and drama.
I love how the supporting players have really been “fleshed out” this season. Just adds to the fun of the show.
Castle’s my favorite show on TV and not just because I want to be Richard Castle some day.
I’ve watched a couple of episodes of Castle and liked it, but I just cannot get involved in another TV series. I tried to watch Lost the first season because it sounded like something I would like, but after half an episode just couldn’t get into it. At some point I may rent it from Netflix. Same for Castle. But right now, just don’t have time if I’m to get any writing done.
When Lost first came on, I was just coming off of several years of having been “addicted” to Alias (another J.J. Abrams show)—and having that show go downhill after investing several years of my live “having” to watch it week after week to keep up with the ongoing storylines. I figured LOST would be the same way.
Then I started working at the publishing house, where several of the gals I worked with were Losties. In fact, a couple of them had the first two seasons on DVD and insisted I at least try watching it. After twenty minutes, I was hooked. I went out and bought seasons 1 and 2 for myself and watched the first half of season 3 online—and have watched it “live” ever since then, as well as purchasing each season as it comes out on DVD (actually, preordering it as soon as it goes up on Amazon. Yes, I’ve already preordered Season 6, even though it isn’t even over yet).
I’m not one of those fans who participates in online discussion groups or forums or anything. But I’ll chat about it with other fans to exchange theories and ideas of where we think the story is going.
Wait to watch it until you have about a week in which you have absolutely nothing to do and just sit and watch the first four episodes back to back. If you’re not tearing the DVD player apart to get the next disc in, you can probably go ahead and give up on it.
Great insight on Ricardo!!! Still, I’m biting my nails on how it will end and hoping good is good and evil is evil…and that the ending will leave me satisfied! Part of me is waiting for a LOST twist that’s going to rock my world and make me say “why did I spend the last five years of my life watching?” But another part of me says, the journey is the real reward!!
After last week’s episode (the Sawyer & Miles Show), I was a little worried about where they were going with this season. But after last night’s, I’m back to drinking the LOST Kool-Aid. Even though this season has done very little to answer questions—has raised more than it has answered—I’m trusting that they’re going to give us a satisfying conclusion. Thought I do have a feeling I’m still going to have a long list of unanswered questions when it’s all over.
Nice to see the fulfillment/purpose of Hurley’s gift—and to see his leadership qualities coming a little more to the forefront.
I am a huge Castle fan. I thought I was the only Firefly/Serenity lover(dork) out there. I used to watch Lost, but it became too emotional for me and I couldn’t sleep at night. I so empathized with them….
No concerts lately. My last was years ago, Harry Connick Jr. :O)
Aaaaargh! OK, CASTLE first . . . Was this week’s the best ever, or what? What a cliffie. Loved the pancake scene, and his ruffed-up hair in that scene . . . As for WHY I’m such a Castle fanatic, I have to agree that it’s Nathan Fillian. My daughter is a Joss Whedon junkie who introduced me to Firefly, and then Dr. Horrible Sing-Along-Blog. I just recently saw the episodes of Buffy with him in it (CREEEEEEEPY!!), and I can honestly say I’ve loved him in everything.
And yes, I even received the “Richard Castle” book, “Heat Wave,” for Christmas. NOT as well-written as the series (I think I read about 4 books while I was trying to wade through it), unfortunately, BUT this last episode made me glad I’d read it. Another thing I’ve loved is that they bring in actual writers in cameo roles. THAT’S fun!
LOST. Oh. My. Goodness. I got in on the LOST thing late when I watched the season finale about 3 seasons ago. After that, I was hooked, and watched all the episodes online while waiting for it to start back the next season. This weeks was amazing – and last weeks was better than I remembered, when I watched the “pop up” version. LOTS of information.
I’ve come to a realization about the side-ways flash. You know how, in the beginning of the season, it seemed as though their lives would have been so much better had they not crashed? I’m noticing, more and more, that their lives actually are just as bad, if not worse, eventually, in the sideways flash scenes. Maybe not in terms of physical danger, but moral dilemma and heartache.
It’s for sure that if the last episode includes Bob Newhart and Suzanne Pleschette (that would be difficult) waking up with him telling her about this incredibly weird dream because of a late supper of moo goo gai pan, I may never speak to JJ Abrams again . . .
Last concert I went to was almost 3 years ago and it was Josh Groban. That man is just as impressive live (and hotter in person) as he is on his albums. That man can sing the phone book and I would still be in love with him.
Now, if only he would get back to work on that new album and get it out this year…….*sigh* it’s been too long.
I’m getting in on this late but the last concert I went to was Toby Mac…before that was during Aquire the Fire where I saw Leeland and Jeremy Camp. Loved them all. I am going to Women of Faith Conference at the end of April and really looking forward to it. I have tried to watch Lost and even got online to try to catch up but I felt so behind that I gave up. I always say I am going to watch Castle because it just looks really good but the only think I take time to watch right now is American Idol and Dancing with the Stars…and I usually end up watching it on DVR because my nights are full with school work.
I am in the minority because I was underwhelmed by last night’s Lost. I had very high hopes and they were not met. I was expecting Richard to be much older and see more of the island history. It was a good story and I was close to tears a few times, but I was expecting more. Maybe I missed some big points or something; I will try to watch the majority again next week in the pop-up-video version. I am not sure how much they have to add though. I will keep watching because I must know the secrets of the island.
Castle is another great show. She better not be dead – I am hoping she was kidnapped or something. Her name is not the title of the show so maybe they would get rid of her. It is very hard to imagine the show with out her.
Was I the only one yelling at the screen last night when Richard brought up that they might be dead? The writers have promised that will not happen and I will not be happy if it is true. It is looking like Jack is going to take over for Jacob though Rose and Bernard might also be a good choice.
Last concert I went to was Ted Nugent-at the Ryman. I will have to say it was Daniel’s idea. Nugent’s not my favorite and the Ryman is not the venue for him.
Last concert I was at was Andre Rieu two years ago. It was absolutely fantastic. Beyond words. The man is brilliant.
My husband and I decided we would be über fans of Castle before it even came on. “New show with Nathan Fillion? Sign us up!” I’ve gotten my whole family into it because my maiden name is Castle and my brothers and I are all writers. My little brother Daniel just made a clip from the intro into his ring tone: “Castle – Castle – Castle…I really am ruggedly handsome!”
