I learn a lot about a character when I write in 1st person. Sometimes when I’m really stuck I’ll even write a scene that way and then edit it back to 3rd or just scrap it. I feel like I’m less critical that way. Weird, I know!

Hi Kaye–

Thought I’d stop by for a quick visit, and to tell you that I’ve read “Stand-In Groom”, and per my influencer status, I mailed it to my cousin who works in a Manhattan bank (the fast-paced crowd). She took it on vacation and LOVED IT! Actually had never read Christian romance– but found it light-hearted and uplifting. So, it’s been around

hah! So that’s how the backstory creeps in.!

No, I don’t know my characters well enough. Figured out that’s why my plot was sagging. So I need to spend some time with my characters. Used to think this was “made-up” work but I understand now how it’s essential.

Wow – I’ve got a character Profile sheet I’ve always used that I thought was good, yours put mine to shame!

I love character profile sheets/notes. I think every author and tv show writer should keep one. One thing that bugs me to no end is when a writer isn’t consistent with their characters.

I can tell when I haven’t done enough work on developing the character’s backstory when I go back and find blocks of backstory have crept into my chapters—simply because it’s something that struck me while I was writing that particular scene and I wanted to write it down as soon as I thought of it.

This is an area I need to work on. I think it’s evident right away which characters in my stories I am most fond of/know the best. The books I love the best have great characters, and I know I’m nowhere near where I want to be in this skill. I think knowing your characters well makes it much easier to write the synopsis and hook.
